Description

S. ABRAMSON.
FIRE ESCAPE.
APPLICATION FILED was, 1916 Patented Feb. 13, 1917.
SAMUEL ABRAMSON, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
Original application filed June 8, 1916, Seria1 No. 102,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ABRAMsoN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, but who has declared his intenti n. of becoming a citizen of the United States, and now residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is a division of an application Serial No. 102,411) filed by me under date of June 8th, 1916.
My present invention relates to a portable fire-escape adapted to be slid along a wire or other type of rope and the descent controlled by friction exerted through a hand-grip of the said rope; and in such connection it relates to the particular structural arrangement of the fireescape for the defined purpose.
The nature, scope and characteristic features of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following; descrip tion taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of the fireescape of my invention illustrated in a condition for use, with the body slip-loops with their take-up rings and showing also the suspended glove or mitt as part of the fireescape friction controlling member to which glove or mitt. the hand is fitted for gripping the rope to regulate the rapidity of descent of the person suspended on the said rope.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the fire-escape, showing the internal arrangement of the same and also how the rope circuitously courses therethrough and the friction clutch member of the fire-escape for engaging the rope by a gloved manipulation of the rope to regulate descent; and
Fig. 3 is an end view of-the said fire-escape.
Referring to the drawings a, is the device, consisting of a metal casting of irregular shape in outline and as arranged reversible, as will be clearly understood from Fig. 2. In one portion are formed eyes a for engaging body slip-loops having take-up Specification of Letters Patent.

rings thereon. The loops span the body of the person so as to fit under the arm-pits of the person. To the right of the eyes a and forming part of the casting a, is arranged a curved formation a having a grooved face for a rope (I, to enter and travel. therein and between upper and lower friction surfaces a? and a", as illustrated in F 2. Opposite the curved formation a of the fire-escape is pivoted a friction clutch member a with a depending stem a, terminating in an eye ((7, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This eye a7, carries a strap (Z, to the lower end of which is movably connected a glove or mitt (Z of leather or other suitable material, for ready application to the hand for rope 0, so as to control the amount of friction brought to bear instantly between the clutch member a and the rope c, in its contact with the curved formation (0 of the said device to thereby hasten or retard the descent of the suspended person (462 Zibitwn the rope 0.
The arrangement of the fire-escape just described is such that it is reversible as will be apparent from Fig. 2 of the drawings and also that several persons can, with safety descend suspended therefrom at one and the same time.
Having thus described the nature and ob ject of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A fire-escape comprising a casting having an internal curved formation for a rope to seat therein, and a pivotal clutch member arranged opposite said formation and carrying a suspended glove or mitt to permit of safely gripping said rope, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A fire-escape, comprising a casting having an internal curved formation for a rope to travel therein and a pivotal clutch member arranged opposite said formation and carrying an eye-bar over which said rope travels and said bar carrying a suspended glove or mitt to permit of the safe gripping of said rope, substantially as and for the purposes described.
fire-escape, comprising a casting, having eyes for body slip-loops, a grooved formation arranged internally of said casting for a rope to engage and travel; friction guide surfaces located above and below said In itness whereof, I have hereunto set formatlon for stud rope to respectively enmyls1gnature 1n the presence oi two subgage', a clutch member pivoted to said castscribing wltnesses.
