HARNESS CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed May 16,
To a-ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Sreor D. BROOKS, a citizen of Dominion of Canada, and resident of Macklin, in the county of Battleford and Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in a connecting ring for harness and has for its primary object the provision of a connecting ring which may be especially adapted for use in connection with a bridle or halter and will serve to securely connect the parts attached thereto.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a connecting ring of the character stated, which will be of eX- tremely simple construction and which will be formed in such a manner as to prevent slipping of the ring upon the bit attached thereto and also retain in proper position upon the ring on attaching a snap hook or the like employed to connect the harness straps or reins to the ring.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a connecting ring of the character stated which will be light in weight, highly efficient in use, may be read ily manufactured at low cost and from which the bit, snap hook and harness straps cannot become accidentally disengaged but will be held in proper position upon the ring.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown. in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the connecting ring.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the ring.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of a special form of attaching hook designed or use in connection with the ring.
Figures 1 and 5 are elevations of the attaching hook, these views being taken at right angles to one another.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view sub- 1922. Serial No. 561,449.
stantially on the plane of line 66 of F igure 1. I Figure 7 is a perspective View of a slightly modified form of the connecting ring.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 7 indicates in general the connecting ring having a reduced bit receiving portion 8 at one side and a flattened portion 9 along a side of the'ring 7 at right angles to the reduced portion '8. The flat-- tened portion 9 has an elongated slot 10 formed therein to receive either abridle or halter strap, according to the location of the ring 7 when in use. At the side of the ring 7 opposite the flattened portion 9, the ring 7 is provided with a finger projection 11 directed inwardly at an angle, thereby in creasing the width of the ring 7 at this point. A. groove 12 is formed in each face of the ring 7 along one side of the finger 11, thereby slightly decreasing thethickness of the ring 7 at this point. The purpose of the groove12 will presently appear.
For use in connection with the connecting ring 7, I have provided a special attaching hook 13 which includes a substantially oval shaped portion open at one side, as shown at 15, so that the attaching hook 13 maybe moved along the groove 12 after placing the open side 15 at one end of the groove 12, The attaching hook must be turned after it has been moved the full length of the groove 12, so that the attaching hook may be secured on the connecting ring 7. In turning the attaching hook 13 on the connecting ring 7, the open side 15 of the attaching hook is moved away from the ends of the groove 12, thereby preventing the attaching hook 13 from becoming accidentally removed from the connecting ring 7. The attaching hook 13 is provided with a slotted transverse end 16 integral with the main or body portion 14 of the attaching hook 13 by a short connecting neck 17. It is therefore evident that the rein or harness strap may be attached to the end 16 of the attaching hook 13 for connection with the ring 7. It is also apparent that the attaching hook 13 may be readily mounted upon or removed from the connecting ring 7, as desired.
I the m dified form of the inventlon shown in Figure 7 the connecting ring 7 is constructed substantially the same as in the preferred form, with the exception that the ring is of the same diameter on all sides, as it is not necessary in this modified form to provide the reduced portion 8 shown in the preferred form.
The modified form of ring may be employed as a halter ring or may be used as a bridle connection with the form of bits now in general use.
It is believed the complete construction and operation of the present invention may now be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs without further detailed description. It may be briefly stated, however, that when the connecting ring disclosed in this application is employed for connecting parts of the harness, the ring will be retained against rotation and will also serve to hold the parts connected therewith in proper position without permitting these parts to slide upon the ring 7. This is particularly true when the form of attaching hook shown as a part of the present invention and designed particularly for use in connection with the ring 7,
is also employed.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed, it is to be understood that minor changes may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.
What I claim as new is:
1. A harness connection comprising a connecting ring'having an inwardly extending slotted portion finger and a groove located at the side of the finger, said ring having a flattened slotted portion to receive a harness strap.
2. A harness connectioncomprisinga connecting ring having an inwardly directed finger and a groove along one side thereof, said connecting ring having a flattened opposed diametrically to said finger to receive a harness strap, said ring having a reduced bit receiving portion at 7 one side.
3. A harness connection comprising a connecting ring having an inwardly extending finger anda groove located. at the side of the finger, said ring having a flattened slotted portion to receive a harness strap and an attaching hook adapted to bev moved along said groove and turned to position the attaching hook on said ring.
4:- A harness connection comprisinga connecting ring having an inwardly directed finger and a groove along one'side thereof, said connecting ring having a flattened slotted portion to receive a harness strap, said ring having a reduced bit receiving portion at one side and an attaching hook having a narrow opening at one side whereby the attaching hook may be moved along the groove of said ring for mounting the attaching hook on said ring or removing said attaching hook, said attaching hook including a turned slotted end to receive a harness strap.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
STACY D. BROOKS.
