BRIDLE AND HALTER.
Application filed July 28, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. CANTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilkesboro, in the county of Wilkes and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bri dles and Halters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness and more particularly to an improved bridle which may be employed either as a driving bridle or as a halter. Y
The primary object of the invention is to provide a bridle having its various parts constructed so that the bridle may retain the bit in proper position when the bridle is used for driving purposes, and which may be adjusted so that the bit will be held in inoperative position when the device is used as a halte'r.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bridle of this character which will be so connected to the bit as to permit the latter to act for supporting one side of the nose band of the bridle when the same is used as a halter. v
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the preferred embodiment and in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bridle as it appears in use,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same,
Fig. 8 is a side elevation,
Fig. 4 is 'a perspective view of the device with the parts adjusted for use as a halter,
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the crown strap 1 is relatively wide and extends across the top of the animals head as shown in Fig. 1 and the ends of the crown strap are split to provide the strap ends 2 and 3. The throat strap 4 has one end connected by a buckle 5 to the strap end 3 and at the opposite side the end of the throat strap is connected by a buckle 6 to the opposite strap end 3. The brow band 7 is of the usual construction and is connected in any suitable manner to the ends of the crown strap so that the brow band will extend in Specification of Letters Patent.

the proper position around the forehead of the animal.
The check straps 8 and 9 are of different lengths, the cheek strap 8 being provided with a buckle 9 adapted to receive the end of the strap end 2 and the buckle is provided with a loop 10 which supports a snap hook 11. -The lower end of the cheek strap 8 is looped as indicated at 12 and a suitable buckle 13 is employed to draw the end of the cheek strap up into position whereby the loop 12 will be of the proper size. The check strap 9 at the opposite side of the bridle, is longer than the cheek strap 8 and a loop 14 is formed in the end of the cheek strap, which loop is maintained in position by a buckle 15 similar to the buckle 13 and it will be obvious that the ends of the straps 8 and 9 may be adjusted in the buckles 13 and 15 so that the relative positions of the loops 12 and 14 may be properly adjusted.
The loops 12 and 14 have extended therethrough the nose band. 16 and inasmuch as one check strap is shorter than the other as stated it will be obvious that one side of the nose band will be higher than the opposite side as shown to advantage in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing and as indicated in Fig. 1. The loop 12, however, has secured thereto a snap hook 17, the hook portion of which is even with the loop 14 in the cheek strap 9. Therefore, the cheekstrap 8 is as much shorter than the cheek strap 9 as the length of the snap book 17. The rings 18 for the bits 19 are adapted to be received in the loops 12 and 14 and the snap hooks 17 respectively as shown so that the bit 19 will be in proper position to be received in the horses mouth without discomfort. The reins 20 are attached to the rings 18 in the usual manner. The buckles 21, at opposite sides of the nose band, carry short lengths of strap 22 which are formed into loops 23 which receive the portions of the straps 8 and 9 which form the loops 12 and 14. These buckles 21 may be employed to adjust the length of the nose band'to fit different horses. The middle portion of the chin strap is joined by a buckle 24.
As shown in Fig. 4, the parts are in the position they assume when the device is used as a halter, the bit 19 has one of its rings 18 received in one of the snap hooks 11 on one side of one of the cheek straps, this be ing the longer of the straps indicated at 9. It will be noted in this figure that the strap 9 is bowed outwardly so that the bit 19 and the rings 18 support this side of the nose band 16 so that the nose band is properly horizontally disposed to use the device as a halter. The strap 8, therefore, must be of a length equal to the combined length of the bit and rings 18 so that when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 4c, the sides of the nose band will be even and the halter rope or strap may be secured to the buckle 24 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 when the device is used in this capacity.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bridle comprising opposite cheek straps of different lengths, the shorter of the cheek straps having a snap hook suspended therefrom, a bit comprising a mouth piece and rings having a combined length equal to the length of the shorter of the said cheek straps, and a snap hook secured to the upper portion of the longer of the said check straps whereby one end of the said bit may be attached to the said snap hook for cooperating with the shorter of the said cheek bands to maintain the lower end of the cheek bands in substantially the same plane, and a nose band supported by the lower ends of the said check straps.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL CORNELIUS CANTER.
