Description

NrTnD STATES A'rnNT FFICE.
ANDREW BUGKHAM, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BREAST-STRAP SLIDE.
.T0 all whom it may concern:
y Be it known that' I, ANDREW BUCKHAM, of Newark, in the county of Essex, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slides for the Breast- Straps of Harness; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makin g a part of this specificati in, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig'. 2 a perspective view of the same as applied to the breastvstrap.
My improvement consists in two ribs (marked R It', Fig. l) made out of metal or other suitable material, and applied to the body of the slide, or forged, east, or otherwise formed out of, or constituting a part of, thel body ofthe slide itself, in such a manner as to allow the ring of the pole-chain or neck-yoke to enter freely between their inner extremities at the angle of the slide, yet of such a sha-pe as to prevent it from being easily displaced from its position in the angle of the slide by a side pull or strain, thus securing the ring in its proper position on the slide and preventing undue strain on any other part thereof, yet allowing the ring to be easily detached when the strap is unhitched. The ribs also tend to preserve the horses from injuries caused by blows from the pole when a sudden jerk is communicated to it by the front wheels, as the ring of the pole-chain or neck yoke, being held securely in its place, the end of the pole is thereby held comparatively steady between the horses.
My improvement also consists in'a. stud or pin, (marked S, Fig. 1,) made out of metal or other suitable material, and applied t0 the body of the slide, or forged, cast, or otherwise formed out of, or constituting a part of, the body of the slide itself on the side next to the strap, said stud or piu being intended to a-pply in a hole or holes in the breast-strap, and thus prevent the slide from slipping on the strap when a heavy side pull or strain comes upon it.
I do not claim the invention of the slide itself, being myself the assignee of half the entire interest in a patent granted therefor to Dexter Pettcngill, of Delhi, New York, on the 25th of November, 1862.
I claim- In combination with a breaststrap slide the ribs R R and tongue S, all constructed and arranged as described.
ANDREW BUGKHAM. Witnesses:
