EQUALIZER TUG ATTACHMENT FOR HARNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1910.
Application filed August 19, 1909. Serial No. 513,546.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. BALCOM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belfast, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Equalizer Tug Attachment for Harness, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a tug attachment for securing the tugs of a harness to the collar or hames.
The object of the invention is to produce an attachment of this class which will give a desirable freedom of movement of the hame and collar, so that the pressure will not be concentrated at a single point on the hame or collar. In other words, the attachment distributes the pull of the tug on the collar, at the same time permitting flexibility.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the attachment showing the portion of the hame in perspective to which the attachment is secured; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the device, certain parts being broken away, the view being upon an enlarged scale and taken on the plane of the flat of the tug; and Fig. 3 is also a longitudinal section of the tug attachment, but passing in a plane at right angles to the fiat of the tug, certain parts being broken away.
eferring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the tug, which at its end adjacent to the hame is provided with a tug iron 2. which iron presents two oppositely disposedplates 3 which are attached rivets i, as shown. These beyond the end of the tug and are expanded into substantially circular heads 5 which are disposed apart, as shown, so as to form a chamber 6 in which a disk or rocker 7 is rotatably mounted on a central pivot or pin 8. These heads 5 are connected to the tug by plates 3 project by a curved wall 9 which cooperates with the heads to form a case inclosing the disk 7. This wall 9 is provided with openings 1.0 and 11 through which links 12 and 13 pass, said links being attached to the disk near the periphery thereof by pivots 14, as indicated. The links 12 and 18 are formed of doubled. straps of metal, the doubled edges or ends 15 whereof are secured to staples 16 which are attached to the side of the hame 17.
In an ordinary harness it should be understood that there is a tug attached to the hame at each side of the draft animal. On account of the pivot 8 it will be evident that the tug may shift into various positions, so that the direction of the pull on the hame may vary considerably. In addition to this it will be evident that the horse may change the elevation or angle of his neck with great freedom, as the disk 7 adjusts itself to any position the hame may take. The pull of the tug is imparted to the hame through the links 12 and 13 in any position the disk assumes, and on account of the fact that the force acting on the hame is separated into two forces. In this manner the hame and collar will seat with more case on the horses neck.
One end of the pivot 8 projects so as to enable a swivel plate 18 to be attached. To this swivel plate a strap 19 may be secured which enables the tug to be attached to the back-strap of the harness.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a hame and tug connector, a plate adapted to be secured to each side of the tug with the ends of the plates extending beyond the tug, each of said ends having a substantially circular head. a disk between the heads, a pivot pin passing centrally through the heads and the disk, and links pivoted at one end to the face of the disk and adapted for connection to the hame at their other end.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY D. BALCOM.
