Description

No. 6|5,827. Patented Dec. I3, I898. C. W. FEHRING.
BREAST STRAP AND HAME CONNECTION.
(Appligation filed Apr. 18, 1898.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
CHARLES XV. FEHRING, OF ANTIGO, \VISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO E. F. NELSON, OF SAME PLACE.
BREAST-STRAP AN D HAME CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,827, dated December 13, 1898.
Application filedApril 18,1893- Serial No. 678,010- (No model-) To aZZ whom it may concerns Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. FEHRING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Antigo, in the county of Langlade and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Breast-Strap Connection, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a simple and effective fastening for connecting straps, chains, and other parts of harness usually coupled by means of a link and, snap-hook. The principal object of the invention is the provision of a fastening of novel construction whereby the breast-strap can be securely coupled to the hames and which will preclude accidental disengagement of said strap when made fast to the hames, the fastening being of such construction as to admit of the parts being easily and quickly coupled and uncoupled at will.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the lower portion of a hame, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the ring. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the ring, showing the relation of the hook when in position to be removed or engaged with the ring. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the ring.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The hame 1 is of ordinary construction and is provided with the usual hame-staples 2 for attachment therewith of the trace or tug. One or more links 3have connection with the lower arm or portion of the hame-staple and support a ring 4, to which the breast-strap 5 is attached by means of a hook 6, the latter having a narrow passage or opening 7 in one side to admit of it being applied to or disengaged from the ring 4. The ring 4 is provided with pairs of notches or depressions 8 in its opposite sides and spaced apart a short distance, so as to materially reduce the thickness of the ring to admit of the opening or passage 7 of the hook 6 receiving the reduced parts of the ring when placing the hook in position or removingit from engagement with the ring. A web 9 spans that portion of the ring having the op.- positely-disposed pairs ofnotches or recesses 8, so as to compensate for the weakening of the ring by reason of the provision of the said notches or depressions. This web 9 strengthens and braces the ring opposite its reduced parts and is provided at an intermediate point with an opening 10 to receive the terminal link 3, by meansof which the ring 4 is connected with the hame-staple. By this means'the connection between the ring and terminal link 3 is fixed, thereby insuring that the reduced parts of the ring will be uppermost, thus obviating the possible accidental disengagement of the hook G therefrom when coupled thereto. The ring at has a reduced portion at each side of its connection with the terminal link 3. Hence the hook 6 can be engaged with or disengaged from the ring upon either side of the connection of the terminal link 3 therewith.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fastening for harness-straps and the like, the combination with a hook having a narrow opening or passage in its side, of a,
ring or link having portions reduced and spaced apart a short distance, and having an integral web opposite the reduced part for stiffening, bracingand strengthening the ring opposite the said reduced parts, and provided with an opening for the reception of a link, substantially as set forth.
2. In a fastening for harness and the like,
