SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,678, dated October 29, 1889. Application filed June 11, 1889. Serial No. 313,858. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. NOYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, county of Broome, andState of. New
York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dressing-Combs, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawing, forminga part of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in dressing-combs, the improvements of the present invention having particular reference to that class of combs having metallic backs secured upon the comb proper at the 5 base of its teeth and serving to give rigidity and strength to thecomb, the ends of said metallic back portion being so formed as to provide end teeth for the comb. In some instances it is desirable to provide the comb with a ringito which can be secured a cord or i chain for preventing the removal of the comb, this ring in combs of present constructions being added to the comb or formed integral with its back portion, in which latter case one 1.25 of the end teeth of the comb formed of the metal ofthe back portion is omitted' It is the object of the present invention to I so construct the back portion of the comb as to form two end teeth for the comb and to at 0 the same time provide a loop for the attachment of a cord or .chain, where such attachi ment is desired, and to so construct such tooth or teeth having such loop or loops that the comb, whensuchattachment is omitted, will not present an'unsightly appearance.
In the accompanying drawing is illustrated a comb embodying the present invention.
In said drawing, A vrepresentsthe comb proper provided with teetha. This portion j .149 of thecomb will be composed of any of the common materials used for the construction of combs, and may be provided, as shown,
with the usual coarse and fine teeth. The back B of the comb, which is of somewhat greater length than the comb proper, is secured around the bases of the comb-teeth by means of suitable dies in the usual manner. The surplus portion of the back B is then bent downward in line with the teeth of the comb proper, so as to provide an end tooth or teeth b, suitably rounded by means of dies to provide smooth surfaces for contact with the hair of the user. the end teeth are turnedoutwardly, as shown, to provide loops or rings a of suitable size for the attachment of a cord or chain. The end portion of the end teeth I) will be turned inwardly sufficiently close .to the adjacent teeth of the comb and widened to prevent the sliding of the chain or cord from the comb.
The invention, although herein illustrated and described as applied to a comb of the class referred to, is applicable advantageously to combs of other constructions. The loop 0 may, if desired, be formed of the end teeth of a comb in which such end teeth are made integral with the rest of the comb and in which the back portion '13 is not present.
WVhat I claim is 1. A comb having an end tooth formed to provide a loop or ring, as c, for the attachment of a cord or chain, substantially as described.
