SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,348, dated September 17, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, HORACE GREELEY Mon- ROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bradford, McKean county, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors Against Heat Prostration; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and-use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in protectors against heat prostration, and which are to be worn in hats; and it consists in the combination of a flat perforated spring provided with a pointed end, guides placed upon the spring for holding the ends in contact with each other, knobs for readily adjusting the size of the spring, and clamping devices attached to the spring for supporting the sponge, cabbage-leaf, or any other suitable material, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to provide an attachment which can be placed inside of and adjusted to the size of any hat, and

.which will support any suitable material either above or in contact with the top of the head, so as to prevent the heat from causing sun-stroke, vertigo, or headache.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spring. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is plan view of a device embodying my invention complete.

A represents a narrow thin flat spring of any suitable length, and which is provided with any desired number of perforations B near one end. One end of the spring is made pointed and bent at a suitable angle, so as to catch in the perforations B, while the other end is attached to a sliding guide C, through which the opposite end of the spring is passed. Secured to the spring near its pointed end is a second sliding guide D, and these two guides serve to hold the ends of the spring in contact with each other, to hold the spring in the form of a circle, and to cause the pointed end of the spring to catch in one of the perforations B, and thus hold the spring in any position into which it may be adjusted. This spring,being flexible, readily adapts itself to the shape of the hat in which it may be placed, and by adjusting the ends of the spring in relation to each other the spring can be adjusted to any sized hat in use. Secured to the inner side of the spring are the two knobs or buttons by means of which the spring can be quickly and readily adjusted into any desired position. Secured to the spring at any suitable points are the small springs G, and to the inner ends of these springs are suitable spring-clamps I, of any suitable construction, which catch hold of the edges of the sponge, cabbage-leaf, cloth, or other suitable heat-non-conducting substance, which is to be suspended in the hat either above or in contact with the top of the head. The springs G allow the clamps sufficient movement, so that they will not tear or injure the sponge or other material when the spring is adjusted to large-sized hats.

If a sponge is used, it is to be moistened, so as to keep the head cool and to prevent the rays of the sun from causing sun-stroke, vertigo, or headache. A cabbage-leaf will act in the same manner as a sponge.

Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the spring provided with a pointed end and a series of perforations, with the sliding guides for holding the ends of the spring in contact, and the supporting-clamps for holding a sponge or other heat-non-conducting substance above or in contact with the head, substantially as shown.
