0. E. P. LEWIS. WATCH OR OTHER CASE.
Patented Nov. 20, 1888.
N. PETERS. PmmLiihn n her, Wxxhmgtcn. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FEICE.
CHARLES E. F. EWIS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WATCH 6R OTHER CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,248, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed April 9, 1887. SerialNo. 234,223. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. F. LEWis, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch and other Cases, of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aperspective View of my strengthening band separated from a watch case. Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views of watch-cases having such b and applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a bonbonniere having its cover strengthened by said band, and Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively crosssections upon lines 00 a; of Fig. 2 and z z of Fig. 4.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
In the construction of watch-cases, bonbonnieres, and other like articles, competition has rendered common the use of the least practicable metal in the covers, and, as a conse quence, much difficulty has been experienced from a want of strength, and the ornamenta tion of such parts has been practicably impossible.
The design of my invention is to enable the hinged covers of watch-cases and other like articles, after completion, to be strengthened in any desired direction, and to be ornamented without material increase in weight; and to such end my said invention consist-sin combining with the exterior ofa cover a band or plate, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the carrying of my invention into practice, in connection with the cover a of a watchcase A, I secure-preferably by solder-upon the outer face of such cover a metal band or plate, B, which-has any desired width and extends entirely across the same, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5.
The band Bis preferably placed in the line of the greatest strain, which, as shown in Fig. 2, extends from the hinge a to the thumbpiece a of the cover a, but may be placed in other positions, if desired, as seen in Fig. 3; but however placed with relation to the hinge, the result is to materially stiffen and strengthen the central portion of said cover and to enable it to withstand without injury a twisting strain that would distort and ruin the same if not supported by said band.
When it is desired, the band B may have the whole or any part of its surface ornamented by embossing, chasing, or otherwise forming thereon the figures selected, which ornamentation of itself will render an otherwise plain cover attracti ve; but, in addition to such decoration, the eXposed portions of a stiffened cover may afterward be ornamented by any of the usual means.
As shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the band Bis applied to the cover 0 of a bonbonniere, O, in substantially the same manner hereinbefore described, where it gives to the same all re quired strength and enables a much less thickness of metal to be employed than would otherwise be practicable.
Having thus described my in vcntion, what I claim is 1. As a means for stiffening and ornament ing the cover of a watch-case or other similar article, and in combination therewith, an ornamented metal band or plate which is secured upon and extends across the outer face of such cover, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
2. As a means for stiffening the hinged cover of a watch-case or other similar article, and in combination therewith, a metal band or plate which is secured upon its outer face and extends across the same in a line with the hinge and the thumb-piece, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As a means for stiffening and ornamenting the hinged cover of a watch-case or other similar article, and in combination therewith, an ornamented metal band or plate which is secured upon its outer face and extends across the same in a line with the hinge and thumbpiece, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set myhand this 4th day of April, 1887.
