ROBERT H. DISNEY, OF
NElVARK, NElV JERSEY.
PACKING AND GUARD FOR STYLOGRAPHIC PENS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,448, dated July 3, 1888.
-Application filed Oct her-3, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. DISNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-sinPackingandGuardsforStylographic Pens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent pens, pencils, and the like from rolling from the table or desk, and to guard against the said pens or pencils working from the pocket, and to serve as a washer for pens carrying their own ink, whereby the ink will be more effectually prevented from leaking from the ink-receptacle.
The invention consists in the improved packing and guard for pencils or pens having the arrangements and combinations of parts thereof substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses oftheelaim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures of the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are plans of the improved guard and packing, the latter showing the preferred form. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through line X of Fig. 1; and
' Figs. 4 and 5 are views, respectively, of a pencil for the improved guards and a pen of the class referred to, the latter being partly in section, to show the improved device as it serves the double function of preventing the pen from rolling off the table or desk and as a packing to prevent the escape of the ink.
In said drawings, a indicates a flat plate, of rubber or similar elastic material, which is cen- Serial 110.251.3053. (No model.)
employed, and, being elastic, the plate may be easily drawn over the pen or pencil, and will spring back into place in the joint or socket provided for it, or will hold tightly upon the plane of the periphery or face of the pencil, the said'plate being preferably of rubber, inasmuch as that material may be employed in erasing the pencil-marks. The outer edges of the plate form inclines c 0, whereby the said plate, as it projects at right angles to the pen or pencil, prevents the said pen or pencil from rolling when laid upon an inclined surface. The opposite faces of the plate, or atleast one of them, may be provided with a stiifeningridge, d, which extends around the perfora tion 1'), thereby giving stiffness to the plate, the central portion of the plate, however, remaining thin or flange-like, as at e, the flangelike portion being in the plane of the guard, and serving as a packing adapted to beintrodnced between ends or bearingsff of the pen, as in Fig. 5.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- The improved guard and packing for pens, pencils, and the like, consisting of a flat rubber plate which is angular at its periphery, having a projecting stiffening-ridge on its face, and perforated within said ridge and provided with a flange which lies in the plane of said plate, said parts being arranged and com bined substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of September, 1887.
ROBERT H. DISNEY.
