Definitions
- the present invention relates to an apparatus for layin g and rqlling out cgating or paving materials, comprising a single means in the fbrm bra roller ior laying as well as rolling out and leveling fluid and solid materials within a wide range of temperatures, said roller having a shield plate to prevent the material being laid to pass 'over the overside of said roller.
- This invention relates to an apparatus for the laying and rolling out of coating or paving materials such as tenacious materials in the form of rubber asphalt compositions, plastic compositions, moulding asphalt, etc., but also more easy-flowing materials such as concrete finishing, sand, gravel and the like.
- a modification of the apparatus according to the invention may be used for the application of a coating, specially of a tenacious type, onto any substrate such as webs or the like.
- a reinforcement may be incorporated in the paving material.
- the apparatus of this application is particularly advantageous with tenacious rubber based surface materials, that is compositions which comprise a mixture of rubber particles, asphalt or a solution of asphalt and a filler.
- One object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus in order to eliminate the laborious paving by hand of such and other tenacious compositions and dry materials, which apparatus not only lays out the masses or compositions but also levels and rolls the same in one and the same working step. 1
- a heating of the roller is not necessary as said roller clue to its relatively small diameter and consequently low heat losses rapidly attains the temperature of the paving material.
- the roller preferably should be heated. This may be achieved by circulating hot oil or air through the roller.
- the roller is vertically adjustable in order to control the thickness of the layer.
- the roller alone levels and rolls the material and determines the thickness of the layer.
- the circumferential speed of the roller may be controlled by means of a transmission as practical tests hae proved a relation between the speed of the roller and the physical properties of the surface material.
- the roller may be lubricated whenever the material has a tendency to stick to the same.
- a reinforcement of the coating material may be inserted into the coating material during the spreading of the same, such coating material comprising a web of synthetic plastic, glass fibers or the like which web is pressed down into the coating material by the roller for said coating and a second roller following said first roller.
- a reinforcement is preferably achieved by introducing into said coating material a quantity of short cut glass fibers.
- Such an addition of a reinforcing material is however very desirable in view of the weak surface nature of the rubber asphalt composition, specially when the paving is used by sportsmen having hobnailed shoes, such nails having a tendency to remove the material from the surface.
- Such a tenacious material containing cut glass fibers can still without diffuclty be laid out by means of the apparatus according to the invention.
- sand and gravel or a mixture of such materials rapidly may be laid out to form a smooth subsurface for slabs such as concrete slabs for roads and sidewalks. Further, a smooth finish of concrete may be laid out.
- An essential advantage according to the invention comprises the possibility to lay out traffic lines at the same time as the main surface is laid, said lines having the same thickness as said main material. This step is not only time saving but also prevents the abrasion of such lines and a possible cutting away of material for making grooves for a colored mass for such lines.
- the non-driven end of the roller is releasably journalled so that the roller automatically follows'the curve.
- a motor may be installed as a driving means.
- the material When the width of the lane to be laid is within moderate ranges such as l to 3 yards the material may easily be laid and spread by means of shovels before the roller at the same speed as the machine is moving forwards.
- the material also may be laid out by hopper means arranged on the machine or on a tractor running before the machine.
- the speed of the machine may vary between 1.7 to 3.3 yards per minute.
- An essential factor for fluid materials is the consistence or viscosity of the same.
- An area between 87 and 230 sq. ft may thus be laid per hour and 1 yard width of the roller.
- FIG. 1 schematically shows a side view of an apparatus according to the invention for paving purposes
- FIG. 2 a front view of the same apparatus in a perspective view.
- the apparatus comprises a frame 9 on which couples of wheels 8 and 24 are arranged in suitable bearings, said wheels preferably being arranged to run on side forms or rails l, for instance with T-Form.
- the wheels may be recommended to use rails made from aluminium or alloys thereof.
- the wheels keep the frame at a desired dis tance from the substrate or bottoming.
- the frame 9 is arranged to carry a load 14 if necessary for an even leveling and rolling of the composition.
- two longitudinally and preferably adjustable side wall plates 10 are arranged. Between said plates 10 a transverse plate 11 is arranged above the bottoming or substructure at a distance corresponding to the desired thickness of the a roller 2 arranged behind said plate 11. Said roller 2 is journalled in bearings at its ends in opposite beams of the frame 9 immediately behind said plate 11.
- roller has a smooth surface, for instance obtained by turning.
- said roller 2 may be made of a metal sheet, preferably a copper sheet; Due to the good heat conductivity of copper a roller made thereof rapidly attains the temperature of the preheated paving composition whereby the rolling is facilitated.
- roller wheels 24 having a smaller diameter than said roller are coaxially mounted or made by turning said ends, said wheels running on said rails 1. Through this arrangement'the roller is imparted a higher circumferential velocity than the wheels. Practical paving tests have shown that this feature is of importance, especially when the coating composition is tenacious.
- a chain wheel 15 is secured to the shaft of said roller and by means of a chain 16 connected with a second chain wheel 6 which may be manually driven by means of a hand crank 17 or by means of a motor, not shown, preferably an electric motor.
- roller In order to prevent adherence of the coating composition to the roller 2 said roller is in contact with a roller which may have a covering of lambs hide or other absorbing material for a lubricant such as soap water, light petroleum or the like.
- the lubricant is fed to the roller 5 from a container 7 through a pipe 20 having a valve 13.
- the pipe 20 opens into a transverse conduit 22 running over the length of the roller 5 and being provided with orifices 23.
- the valve 13 may be regulated by means of a control lever 18.
- the roller 5 is driven by a belt 12 connected to the wheel 24.
- a roll 3 with reinforcing web is mounted in the frame 21.
- the web of reinforcing'm aterial is guided in front of the roller 2 and beneath the same and backwards to be pressed down into the mass by means of a preferably vertically adjustable roller 4, preferably provided with cams.
- the roller 4 also is in engagement with said lubricating roller 5 in order to prevent sticking of the mass to said roller.
- lubricant need not be continuously supplied to the lubricating roller 5 but that such supply generally only is needed during the starting period of paving.
- the paving mass is supplied to the space between plates and 11 and the subsurface.
- the material is rolled forwards and at the same time pressed down and rolled out by means of the roller 2 to the thickness desired.
- the material is prevented to pass over the overside of roller by means of the plate 11.
- the reinforcing may be rolled down into the paving material.
- Conventional means may be used to make the side plates vertically adjustable.
- roller 2 According to one aspect of the invention the roller 2.
- the roller is vertically adjustable and journalled in adjustable means and drivable over a transmission (not shown) connected to the driving means for the machine.
- the roller is vertically adjustable Moreover. the roller may be connected to a source of heat (not shown) for circulating a heated fluid through the same in case the paving material should need a high temperature for laying, for instance 400 to 480 F.
- a source of heat circulating heated oil may be used.
- a narrow pocket may be mounted on the plate 1 1, said pocket comprising two parallel plates extending as far downwards as the side plates 10. Then a different colored material is introduced into said pocket. During laying, the traffic line is laid to the same depth as the main paving material.
- one end of said roller is disengaged so that the roller freely turns when turning the machine.
- the main feature of the invention is the roller which works, presses down and rolls out the material in a single step without the need for other leveling means and road rollers.
- the apparatus may be provided with oscillating means, either for the leveling plate 1 1 and/or the roller 2, such means facilitating the laying of compositions of a more liquid nature.
- said drive wheel further includes a chain wheel mounted coaxially therewith for manual driving of said roller.
