COMBINED PAPER-KNIFE AND STAMP-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,415, dated March 13, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BERNARD Bron, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Paper-Knife and Stamp-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a paper knife or cutter which is provided at the handle with a holder for postage-stamps, by which the paperknife can be conveniently used for storing (lifferent articles and be more convenient for use on ladiesand gentlemens writingdesks; and the invention consists of a paper-cutter the handle of which is provided with bent-up pieces that form three of the side walls of a postage-stamp holder, an end wall soldered to said bent-up pieces, a springactuated follower in said lJOXShZtPQCl receptacle, and a cover that is provided with side lugs for depressing the follower and closing the same, and means for holding the hinged lid in closed position.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my combined paperknife and postage-stamp holder. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical longitudinal sections of the postage stamp holder, showing the same respectively in open and closed positions; and Fig. 4 is a side view of the blank from which the combined paper-knife and postage-stamp holder is made.

A in the drawings represents a paper-knife, which is made of' a blank, A, cut from sheet metal of suitable thickness. The blank A is provided at its handle end, B, with three eX- tension-picces, (t a, that are made integral with the body of the papenknife and bent up at right angles to the handle, so as to form three sides of a small box or receptacle, 0, for postage-stamps or other suitable articles. The fourth transverse end wall. a, of the box is soldered or otherwise attached to the side walls, a a, and the handle B.

In the box 0 is arranged a spring-actuated follower, D, that is prevented from being forced to the outside of the box by means of ledges d at the upper edge of the side walls. a a. A lid, E, is hinged to the receptacle 0, and also acted upon by a spring or springs, e e, which are preferably made in one piece with the springs actuating the follower D, the springs e 6 being applied to a fixed transverse pintle, e, as shown in Fig. 2. at both sides with lugs f, that serve to depress the followerD when thelid is closed. A springcatch, linkhook, or other suitable fastening device, 9, serves to lock the lid to the box 0, so as to hold the stamps in position in the holder. When the fastening device of the lid is released, the lid is raised by its spring, while the follower is lifted as soon as the side lugs, f, of the lid are withdrawn, the postagestamps or other articles being raised by the follower, so that they can be conveniently removed from the box 0.

By making the body of the postage-stamp receptacle integral with the handle of the paper-knife a strong construction of the holder is obtained without doubling the bottom of the box, which would be the case when a separate stamp-holder is soldered or otherwise applied to the handle of the paper-cutter. A very neat and convenient implement for writing desks of ladies and gentlemen is thus obtaincd which combines in a handy and conven ient manner the use of a paper-knife with a receptacle for postage-stamps, wafers, steel pens, or other articles.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the handle of a paper knife, of a postage-stamp holder or re ceptacle three side walls of which are bent up from and made integral with said handle, a spring-actuated follower in said receptacle. a spring-actuated lid hinged to said receptacle, and means for locking the lid to the receptaole, substantially as set forth.
