SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 562,577, dated June 23, 1896.

To cz/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,\WILLIAM CLAsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain neuT and useful Improvements in Covers for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cover for boxes, bags, and other articles, by Which the box or bag can be readily opened so as to discharge thecontents of the salne, and Which cover is automatically closed Whenever the moved portion of the same is released; and the invention consists of a cover for boxes, bags, and other articles, which comprises a stationary section attached to the box, bag, or other article, said stationary section being provided with guide-flanges having upturned guide-lugs, and an opening at one end of the section, and a second sliding section provided with slots receiving said lugs, the iixed and sliding sections being provided with raised longitudinal portions that form a housing for a spring, by which the sliding cover-section is closed as soon as released.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved cover for boxes, bags, and other articles shown as applied to a bag of smoking-tobacco. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cover, showing the same in open position; and Figs. 3 and 4 are a'vertical longitudinal and a vertical transverse section of the same, respectively,
on lines 3 3 and 4 4, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the stationary section of my improved cover for boxes, bags, and other articles, which section is preferably made of sheet metal and provided With an edge flange a, by Which the cover is connected in any suitable manner to the body of the box, bag, or other article. The connection of the flange a With a box can be made by soldering, and the connection With a bag by gluing, by tying, or by stitching the bag to the. flange a, the latter being in this case either provided with holes or other means of attachment. The stationary coversection A is further provided at one end with an opening a through which the contents of the box or other article are discharged.
4is further provided at opposite sides with inwardly-turned flanges a2, Which, in connection With the main portion A' of the coversection A, form the support for a sliding cover-section B. The sliding cover-section B is retained on the stationary cover-section A by being guided on lugs b, that are made integral With the stationary cover-section and bent up at right angles to the same, so as to pass through parallel slots b of the sliding cover-section B, after which the lugs are turned over, so as to retain the sliding coversection on the stationary cover-section A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The sliding coverary cover-section, it being approximately equal in size With the solid portion A' of the stationary cover-section, so that when the sliding section is placed in open position it clears the opening a' of the stationary coversection and permits the discharge of the contents of the box, bag, or other article. The stationary andthe sliding cover-sections are provided with longitudinal housings d d', respectively, vvhich are preferably stamped up from the stock of the cover-sections and are preferably of semicircular cross-section,said housings serving for the reception of a helical spring e, the ends of which abut against the shoulders formed by the ends of the housings, as shown in Fig. 3. The helical spring e serves for closing the sliding cover-section as soon as the same is released. As the housing d of the sliding cover-sectionB projects from the body of the same, it is used as a rest for the linger When moving the section B into 'section is made of less size than the stationopen position against the expansive action of the spring e, the section B being immediately closed by the spring as soon as it is released. As the housings d d are closed at their ends, they inclose the spring e entirely, so that no portion of the contents of the box, bag, or other article can enter into the space inclosed by the housing and interfere With the proper action of the spring. The cover can be made in circular, oblong, oval, or other shape, according to the shape of the box or other article on Which it is to be used. Both cover-sections are struck up from suitable sheet metal by means of dies, the entire cover being formed of three parts, namely, the two IOO cover-sections and the cushioning-spring for the sliding cover-section B, so that the cover can be made up at a loW cost.
The cover is intended for use With boxesA containing' spices, or with bags containing tobacco or similar articles, and forms a tightlyclosing and conveniently-operated cover by which the contents of boxes, bags, rbc., can be readily removed as required for use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters the sliding section located in the housings of the main and sliding sections, substantially as set forth.

Acover for boxes, bags or other articles, consisting of a stationary or main cover-section, provided with an opening at one end and With guide-lugs bent up from the main seetion, a sliding cover-section of less length than the main section, provided With guideslots for the lugs, both sections being provided with longitudinal housings, and a spring inserted into the housings of the main and sliding sections, substantially as set forth.
