UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE AARONV S. NICHOLS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 367,836, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed April 20, 1887.` Serial No. 235,557. (No model.) l
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, AARON S. NIcHoLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at-'Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented anew and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to small-sized boxes primaril y designed to be used as pocket match- "boxes, but equally adapted to hold other slendersimilarly-shaped articles, and also adapted to be used as coin-holders and as receptacles for other articles.
The invention consists of two inclosing end caps rigidly secured together by an interior connection and a body inclosed in said ends and capable of being longitudinally moved therein, the body being provided with an opening, which in one position of the body is con cealed or covered by one of said end caps and in the other position is exposed. I
The invention also consists in such a box as above described when provided with an inclined partition, whereby itis specially adapted to use with matches and similar articles.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specitication, and in which similar letters of refercneeindicatelike parts, Figurelis a side elevation of a reetangularshaped box adapted to be carried in the pocket and embodying my invention.'y Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal edge views ofthe same, showing the Inovable body in different positions. Fig. 4 is a section on line4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 shows the blank by which the inclosing end caps may be connected together, and which at the same time forms the inclined partition used in the box when employed for matches. Fig. 6 shows this blank bent into shapein perspective. Fig. 7 shows a suitable way ofjoining the end caps when the inclined iioor is not desired. Fig. 8 is a section, similar to Fig. 4, ofthe moditication shown in Fig. 7.
In the drawings, A B are the inclosing end caps, struck out of sheet metal and provided with rims .a of a width greater than the length of movement desired for the body.
C is the movable body, also formed of sheet metal and conforming to the interior of the cap-rims closely, so that there may be sufficient friction between it and the rims toprevent the body from accidental sliding. The body has a slight longitudinal movement within the rims of the caps, and is provided with an opening near one end, as shown at c, through which the contents ol' thebox are inserted or withdrawn. Thelougitudinal movement is just sufficient tofcover and uncover this opening. Figs. 1, 2, anda show this opening uncovered, and at Fig. 3 the body is shown as moved to its other position, whereby the openingcis concealed bythe rim of the cap B.
Extending through the interior of the body, and rigidly connecting the two caps together, is a connecting-piece, E, which may be one or more simple wires or strips, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, or the blank shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The strips, where such are used, are securely soldered at d to the inside surface ofthe caps, so the latter cannot rock thereon. The blank is, however, very desirable for this interior connection, as it may be bent to the shape shown in Fig. 6, giving it two broad end flanges, e, well adapted to be soldered tothe caps, and an inclined dividing iioor or partition, F, which, in addition to the function hereinafter ascribed to it, also acts to prevent the collapse of the body. The portionsf of the blank lie flat against the sides of the body. The lower end of the inclined floor F is located just below the opening c when the latter is in the open position, and the matches or other articles containedin the box are thus caused to slide down said iioor and automatically' present themselves at theopening for withdrawal. i
It will beunderstood from what has already been said that the boxes are opened and closed `construction may be greatly varied to adaptY the box to different uses.
I claiml. The box consisting of the inclosing end caps rigidly secured together and the movable body having an opening ,near one end for the insertion or Withdrawal of the contents, snbmovable body, of blleblanl; E7 uniting the caps' stnntinlly as specified. and forming the inclined floor, substantially 2. The box consisting of the nelosingcaps as specified. secured together und :L movable body, in c0111- AA RON S. NICHOLS. 5 bination with the inclined floor F, snbstan- Vitnesses:
tinlly as specified. H. M. MUNDAY,
3. The combination, with the caps andthe EDMUND ADCOCK.
