Description

A. E. BLACKMAN.
SHEET METAL BOX.
APPLIoATIoN FILED JULY 22, 1909.
Patented July 5,-
provided with a hole 19 to form UNIT-E SHEET-METAL BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led July 22, 1909. Serial No. 508,890.
Patented July 5, 1910.
To all whom t may concern.' y Be it known that I, ALBERT E. BLACKMAN,
la`"\citizen of the United States, residing at 4embodiment of my lnvention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank of the box before being folded up; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the blank for the-cover; Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the cover and box after being folded up and fastened toget'her; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail.
In met-al boxes for use as switch boxes or cut-out boxes, cheapness of construction is a material factor, and' one of the-'comparatively expensive parts of the cost of assembling such a box is the pivot connection between` the cover and the main body of the box. By my construction I have dispensed with the necessity of any separate pivot connections such as are usually employed, thereby'reducing the cost of the box, and haveA attained other advantages. The blank shown in Fig. l is supposed to be folded up on the dotted lines 1., 2, 3 and 4 to form a bottom 5, with end portions 6 and7 and side portions 8 and 9. The end portions have wings 10, 11, which are folded inwardly on the -dotted lines 12 'and 13, which may extend inside the sidelportions as shown in Fig. 3 if desired, and maybe fastened tothe sides by rivets 14 passed through ,the holes 15 and 16. 17 represents partially punched-- out portions of the box to make so-called knock-out openings if desired. The sides 8 and 9 are provided with integral portions 18 which extend beyond the end portions 6 and 7, when the box is folded up into-shape as shown in Fig. 3, and each of them isf a pivot for` the cover, as hereafter ex lained.
The cover 20 shown in ig. l2is folded up on the dotted lines so as to inclose thefbox when turned down uponthesame by the- 'end portions 21, -`22 and side portions 23, v.
'24. The side portions 23, 24v of the .cover also have integral lu or extensions v25, 26, perforated' at 27, 8. The lugs 25, 26
are placed outside -of the box, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 and also in Fig. 4, with the end portion 21 of the vcover inside of the `extensions 18 and rivets 28 through the holes 19 and 25 form a pivot between the cover andthe main portion of the box. The cover may be swung down to completely inclose the box.
This construct-ion makes an simple and `cheap device.
As the extensions v18, when the box is assembled, inclose thel endV portion 21 of the cover, the cover when it 1s swung open to the extent shown in Fig. 4, will cause the shoulders 29 to abut against the end 'of the extensions 18, as shown in Fig. 4, and form a stop for the cover. The inside width of the cover, when Afolded up, is obviously such that the portions 23, 24 stand outside ofthe side walls 8 and 9 of the `main portion of the body. It is preferable to have the end portions 21, 22 of the cover also inclose the end walls 6 and 7 ofthe box.
. I do not limit myself to the specific construction shown in the drawings, as many changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
A sheet metal box composed of a single sheet of metal folded up on four sides to form the walls of the box, and rovided with integral portions of each side extending beyond the adjacent wall to form a supextremely port for a pivotal c'iinection, a cover forl the box formed of a singleblank of sheet metal having its edges folded to fit ,the box and provided at opposite sides with inte al extensions outside of the adjacent walITof said box and fastened to the integral extensions from said box by a pivotal connection, the turned over edge of one end of said cover which is adjacent the pivotal connectiont'o the body of the bpx being located inside of the integral extensions from themain portion of the box but the end wall of said box tact therewith.
' Signedlat New York city, N. Y. this 20th dayf July, 1909.
