To all whom it may noncem:

Be it known that I, HERBERT BLANDFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Box Locks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to paper box locks and has for an object to provide a locking member or combination for paper box structures of various types and kinds, but especially adapted for use in conjunction with the folding paper box which forms the subject matter of co-pending application Serial Number 640,59, filed on even date herewith.

A further object of the invention is to provide a lock embodying a tab and ear carried by one member with an arcuate slot carried by the other member producing a guide for the convenient insertion of the ear when the tab is folded downwardly into proper engaging position.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel parts, units and combinations, as disclosed in the drawings, together with equivalents thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the ear of the locking tab inserted under the arcuate guide and in position to complete the final step of the locking;

Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of a box with the lock formed integral therewith shown in completely locked position;

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 414 of Figure 3 showing the parts in assembled position.

Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The improved box lock which forms the subject matter of this application is adapted to be used with folding or other boxes of various types and kinds comprising in their structure a cover 10 hingedly connected with the side or end section 11. The remaining portions of the box structure are immaterial to the present invention but must provide 1923. Serial No. 640,595.

means for hinging the tab 12 to the cover member 10 so that it shall fold downwardly upon the exterior of the end 11, as shown in the figures. At its end, the tab 12 is provided with an offset ear 13 proportioned to be inserted through the arcuate slot 1 1, which said arcuate slot 14 produces a guide 15 which, when bent out from its initial position, as shown at Figure 1, to its outwardly extending position, as shown at Figure 2, forms a guide for the ear 13 as it is slipped through the slot, the effect being the same as a straight slot extending between the

16 and 17 with the arcuate guide member 15 attached thereto.

Preferably at the joining of the ear 13 with the tab 12, or in line with its forward side, notches 18 and 19 are formed, the width of the ear 13 being such as to require some slight force to insert through the slot 14, but when seated with the notches 18 and 19 coinciding with the

16 and 17, retains itself in position.

As shown at Figure 2, the cover 10 is slightly bent at 20 for the insertion of the ear 13. The bending of the cover depends, of course, upon the construction of the cover and its relation to the parts and the bending will be found necessary only when a cover similar to that shown in the drawings or an equivalent is employed. At other times, the ear 13 may be inserted without such distortion. If, however, a bend is made at the line 20, it is not a scored bend and offers resiliency for holding the ear 13 in its locked position.

It is believed that the operation of the ear in assembling and disassembling will be fully understood from an examination and from the foregoing description, and further supplement along that line unnecessary.

What I claim is:

1. The combination with a box composed of sheet material embodying an end and a normally plane cover hinged to the side of the box, an end flap turned downwardly from the margin of said cover and notched to divide said flap into two sections, one folded within the interior of the box and the other upon the exterior with the edge of the end embraced within said notch, and an ear formed on the outer section extending away from the hinge, the said end being provided with a slot proportioned to receive the ear and so positioned as to re= quire the ear to be first retracted before inserting by the bending of the cover at the apex of the notch.

2. The combination with a box composed of sheet material embodying an end and a normally plane cover hinged to the side of the box, an end flap turned downwardly from the margin of said cover and notched to divide said flap into two sections, one inserted within the interior of the box and the other upon the exterior, the edge of the end being embraced Within said notch, and an ear formed on the outer section extending away from the hinge and located upon an arc with the apex of the notch as a center, the said end being provided with a slot proportioned to receive the ear and so positioned as to require the ear to be first retracted before inserting by the bending of the cover at the apex of the notch.
