HEARTH-SPITTOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,872, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed February 12, 1887. Serial No. 227,412. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DUDLEY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marion, in the county of Williamson and State of Il1in0is,'have invented certain new and use,- ful Improvements in Hearth-Spittoons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying draw; ings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a top view; Fig. 3, a sectional view.
My invention relates to stove-spittoons designed for use in connection with that class of stoves known as sliding-hearth stoves, to receive cigar-stumps and tobacco-quids, 850.; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a part of a stove, and B designates the ash-pit extension, which usually projectsbelow the stove-door G.
D designates a hoppershaped vessel,of iron or pottery, which is designed to take the place of the sliding hearth after the latter has been removed. The vessel D is of such configuration, so far as its base is concerned, as to fit the seat formerly occupied by the sliding hearth. The vessel D is provided with a slot, E, in its front wall. In the slot E a removable bottom or slide, F, is placed, and is adapted to close the bottom of the hopper I), when de sired, by pushing said slide in; or the slide may be drawn out at any time to permit the contents of the hopper to be dropped into the ashir'eceptacle of the stove, and also to regulate the draft of the stove.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with a stove provided with a projecting ash-receptacle, of a removable hopper adapted to fit upon the said ashreceptacle, and having a slide for closing the bottom of said hopper, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM DUDLEY SMITH.
