GEORGE WV. BOLL AND PASOHAL E. VILHITE, OF MOUNT HOPE, KANSAS.
TAN K-H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part O Letter Patent NO. 645,451, dated. March 13, 1900. Application filed October 18, 1899. Serial No. 734,024. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
,PAscHAL E. WILHrrE, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Hope, in the county of Sedgwickand State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tanks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in watering-tanks for use Aby live stock; and its object, among other things, is to provide a tank of simple and durable construction with means to prevent freezing of the contents of the tank during cold weather. v 1
To these ends the invention consists in con-- structing the tank with, preferably, a coneshaped bottom and a due extending upward therefrom through the center of the tank to a point above the upper edge thereof 5 also, in providing means whereby the side of the tank may be strengthened to resist any pressure which might be brought to bear thereagainst by the stock while drinking, 85e.
The invention also consists in the further novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of our invention, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our im-y proved tank with cover removed. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the tank and its cover.
' Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A is the side of the tank, which is formed of any suitable material, as galvanized iron, steel, duc., and B is the bottom thereof, preferably cone-shaped, asshown, and secured to the side by means of rivets or in any other desired manner. A liuc O extends upward from the center of the bottom, with which it communicates, to a point above the upper edge of the side A and is provided with a suitable damper, as D, whereby the draft therethrough may be regulated as desired.
Within the chamber E, formed by the coneshaped bottom B, is located a suitable device, as F, whereby the tank may be conveniently and expeditiously heated. This heating dep vice may consist of a small furnace constructed of boiler-iron or masonry, or, if desired, a lamp of suitable size may be placed within the chamber.
By means of the damper D the heat Within the chamber E can be regulated, and by providing a cone-shaped bottom B the maximum amount of surface is exposed to the heat, which is also capable of reaching all points upon the bottom of the tank.
To the upper edge of the side A of the tank is riveted an angle-iron, as G, which serves to brace the side against any pressure which might be exerted thereagainst by the stock.
If desired, a cover, as H, may be provided for the tank. This can be utilized for retaining the heat within the water when the tank is not in use.
While we have described our tank as adapted for watering stock, it is to be understood that the same may also be utilized for soaking corn or for cooking feed, if so desired.
The furnace F, which We have illustrated in the drawings, is preferably semicircular in cross-section, as shown, and is provided with achimney F', which extends into the ue C, as shown.
In the foregoing description We have shown the preferred form of our invention; but we do not limit ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications may be made therein Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and we therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a watering-tank, the combination, with the side, having strengthening means at its upper edge, of a conical bottom forming a chamber thereunder, a furnace within said chamber, a flue extending from the bottom to a point above the upper edge of the side, a chimney to the furnace projecting into the flue, a damper in said flue, and a cover, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we ax our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE IV. BOLL. PASCHAL E. VVILHITE.
