. lowing is a specification, reference being had -to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to coal-scuttles, and more particularly to that class in which a reservoir or compartment is provided to catch the drippings from the coal, and it has for its object to improve and simplify articles of this class.

With these ends in view the invention consists in the combination, with a coal-scuttle, of a compartment or reservoir and a hinged bottom having a series of holes or openings.

The invention further consists in the improved construction and combinations ofparts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a coal-scuttle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modification, and Fig. 4 a vertical section of the same.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the scuttle, which is of the ordinary well-known construction, and is provided with a pivoted bail or handle, B.

0 represents the mouth of the scuttle, and D the inclined front end of the same.

E represents a metal strip or plate, which is secured to the inner sides of the scuttle at the inclined front end of the same, so as to form a space or chamber, a. The upper end of the strip or plate E is bent outwardly and secured to the mouth of the scuttle, thus closing the upper end of said space or chamber. The lower end of the metal strip or plate terminates at a point a short distance from the bottom of the scuttle, and hinged to the lower end of the plate E is a supplemental bottom, F, which is formed with a series of holes or openings, 6. scuttle, and serve to form a space between the bottom and supplemental bottom.

The operation is as follows When coal is placed in the scuttle, if there be any water in the same it will pass through the coal into the space between the supplemental bottom and the bottom through the holes or openings 12, and when the scuttle is tilted the water will run into the space or chamber a, and is thus prevented from entering the stove with the coal. Should the space below the supplemental bottom become filled with siftings or fine particles from the coal, the said bottom may be easily raised and the siftings removed.

In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4. the plate E is provided with a series of vertical slots adjacent to its lower end, and the supplemental bottom is provided with slots instead of perforations or openings.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. The combination, with a coal-scuttle, of a verticallyarranged plate forming a vertical chamber, and a hinged supplemental bottom. 2. The combination, with a coal-scuttle, of

a strip, E, forming a chamber at the front end of the scuttle, and a supplemental bottom hinged to the lower end thereof and having a series of openings.

3. The combination, with a coal-scuttle, of

a plate, E, bent at its upper end and secured to the upper front end of the scuttle, and secured to the inner sides so as to form a chamber open at its lower end, and a supplemental bottom hinged to the lower end of said plate and supported on a horizontal line therewith, said bottom having a series of openings.

4. The combination, with a coal-scuttle, of a plate, E, secured to the inner side and forming a chamber, and a hinged bottom having a series of holes or openings and downwardlyextending flanges, as set forth.
