A W. C. HIGGINS.
FIRE POT.
Patented July 14, 1885.
I ZNVINZUH. fiaflabafzk" WA 6 a i W??? PATENT CFFIcE.
WERTER C. HIGGINS, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
FIRE- SPBCIFIGA'EION forming part of Letters Application filed January 2, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WERTER O. HIGGINS, of Norwich, in the, county of New London and State of Connecticut, have inventedanew and useful Improvement in Fire-Pots, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of fircpots known as finger-pots, which are formed with a series of downwardly-cxtending projections or fingers each separated from the other by a space, so that the mass of fuel is supported laterally by the fingers, and at the same time a sufficient draft of air is afforded through the spaces between the fingers.
As heretofore constructed the grates for this class of fire-pots had to be supported within the stove separately from the fire-pot.
The object of my invention is to produce a finger-pot in which the grate is supported directly upon the pot itself; and to this end my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention further relates to the grate; and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction and arrangement of the same, whereby it is adapted to act advantageously in connection with the fire-pot, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an upper side plan view of the fin gcr-pot, its grate, and the shaker-slide there for. Fig. 2 is an under side plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
In the said drawings, A designates the finger-pot, which, as shown, is of circular form and is a metal casting. The lower margin of the pot is formed with a series of downwardlyextending projections or fingers, a, which are separated from each other by spaces. These fingers serve to support laterally the mass of fuel resting upon the grate, and they may be POT.
Patent No. 322,289, dated July 14, 1885.
(No model.)
either of the proportional length. shown in the drawings or longer, as desired. The spaces between the fingers allow of the entrance of air tot-he fuel, so as to afford suilicient draft to the burning mass. (1. designates downwardly-extending L-shaped lugs, three of which are shown, which are cast upon the sides of the finger-pot and serve to support the grate B. This grate is of annular form, and is an open-work casting. On its under side the grate is formed with a circular groove, I), into which extend the upturned lower ends of the lugs a. Thus it will be seen that the finger-pot, which is to be rigidly supported in the stove in any suitable manner, is arranged to support the grate directly upon itself, and that no separate support is required for the grate.
The grate is shown as a vibrating shaking grate, and G designates the shaker-bar. This bar also serves as the slide, so that by with drawing it the center of the middle of the grate is opened, and through this opening the contents of the fire pot may be removed. The inner end of the bar C is formed with an enlargement, c, which is of such shape as to close an opening in the center of the grate, and which, when in closed position, is supported by two lugs, 72, formed on the under side of the grate at the sides of its opening.
b designates two downwardly-extcndi nglugs which are formed on the under side of the rim of the grate, and serve to carry the grate with bar C when the latter is vibrated as a shaker. Y
My improved pot and grate is compact, simple, and durable, and serve to avoid the clogging which occurs in this class of devices as heretofore constructed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent? The combination, with the pot A, having the fingers a and lugs a, of the grate B, having the lugs b I) and the groove b, and the bar C, having the enlargement c, as specified.
WERTER C. HIGGINS.
