v PATENTED MJEIH an SHEEI 2 BF 2 RATCHETING NUT WRENCHES This invention relates to ratcheting nut wrenches comprising jaws spaced apart by an aperture and having first parallel aperture boundary faces and second aperture boundary faces connected to the first aperture boundary faces and making an angle with said first aperture boundary faces and with one another.
According to the invention, the wrench has a third aperture boundary face which makes an angle with the other aperture boundary faces and is located between the second aperture boundary faces, and in the regions between the first and second aperture boundary faces there is provided a projection and a recess, respectively, which are facing respectively towards and away from the third aperture boundary face,
-The ratcheting nut wrench according to the invention provides a very secure grip about the nut or like element to be operated with and by the wrench and at the same time the wrench can remain engaged with the nut for accomplishing the operation, the wrench when turned in one rotative sense carrying the nut along and when turned in the opposite sense ratcheting about the nut without actuating it. This property is of great practical importance whenever the object is difficult to get at and to observe.
The invention will be more fully described in the following specification with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. I is a side view of a ratcheting nut wrench according to the invention in a position engaging a nut for turning it;
FIG. 2 is a side view of the wrench in another position of engagement;
FIG. 3 is a partial side view of a modified form of the wrench.
In FIG. I the wrench is designated I, the wrench aperture 2 and the wrench jaws 3 and 4. The jaw 3 can be moved towards and away from the jaw 4 by known means (not shown). The
jaws 3, 4 have first parallel aperture boundary faces 5 and second aperture boundary faces 6 which are connected to the first aperture boundary faces 5 making an angle with them and with one another. The wrench has a third aperture boundary face 7 which is arranged at an angle with respect to the other aperture boundary faces 5, 6 and is located between the second aperture boundary faces 6, thus interconnecting the last-mentioned faces. Provided in the regions between the first and second aperture boundary faces 5, 6 is a projection 8 and a recess 9, respectively, which are facing respectively towards and away from the third aperture boundary face 7.
In the embodiment illustrated, the projection 8 is formed by one of the first aperture boundary faces 5 being offset inwardly of the aperture 2 with respect to one of the second aperture boundary faces 6. The recess 9 is formed by the other of the first aperture boundary faces 5 being offset outwardly of the aperture 2 with respect to the other of the second aperture boundary faces 6.
If the wrench shown in FIG. 1 is turned in the rotative sense shown by the arrow 10 a hexagon nut 11 indicated by dashanddot lines will be carried along in the same sense. Without being removed from the nut ill the wrench t can be swung in the rotative sense indicated bytlhe arrow 12, in which case the wrench ratchets in effect about the nut to get a new grip on the nut 11. FIG. 2 shows another position of engagement with the nut 11, that can be obtained by means of the wrench i.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 3 the first aperture boundary faces 5 are provided between the second aperture boundary faces 6 which are situated respectively outside and inside of said first aperture boundary faces 5. At least one pair of the aperture boundary faces 6 is mutually connected by means of the third aperture boundary face 7. Anenlargement 13 of the jaws 3, d is indicated by dash-and-dot lines, said enlargement also having a third aperture boundary face 7. The wrench illustrated in FIG. 3 can be turned in two rotative senses indicated by the arrows 14', and I5 and in the two senses either carry along the nut 11 or ratchet about said nut. It is readily seen that the described wrench will therefore be very useful.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A ratcheting nut wrench comprising jaws spaced apart by an aperture and having first parallel aperture boundary faces and second aperture boundary faces connected to the first aperture boundary faces and making an angle with said first aperture boundary faces and with one another, wherein a third aperture boundary face makes an angle with the second aperture boundary face and is located between the second aperture boundary faces, and in the regions between the first and the second aperture boundary faces there is provided a projection and a recess, respectively, which are facing respectively towards and away from the third aperture boundary face, wherein the projection between on of the first aperture boundary faces and one of the second aperture boundary faces is formed by the first aperture boundary face being offset inwardly of the aperture in relation to the second aperture boundary face, and the recess between the other of the first aperture boundary faces and the other of the second aperture boundary faces is formed by the first aperture boundary face being offset outwardly of the aperture in relation to the second aperture boundary face.

A ratcheting nut wrench as claimed in claim I, wherein the first aperture boundary faces are located between the second aperture boundary faces which are situated outside and inside said first aperture boundary faces and at least one pair of which are interconnected by means of the third aperture boundary face.

A ratchet nut wrench comprising jaws spaced apart by an aperture and having first parallel aperture boundary faces and second aperture boundary faces connected to the first aperture boundary faces and making an angle with said first aperture boundary faces and with one another, characterized by a third aperture boundary face which makes an angle with the second aperture boundary faces and is located between two of the second aperture boundary faces, and in the region between the first and the second aperture boundary faces of at least one of the pairs of such surfaces there is provided a projection and a recess respectively which is facing towards or away from the third aperture boundary face.

Claims (3)

1. A ratcheting nut wrench comprising jaws spaced apart by an aperture and having first parallel aperture boundary faces and second aperture boundary faces connected to the first aperture boundary faces and making an angle with said first aperture boundary faces and with one another, wherein a third aperture boundary face makes an angle with the second aperture boundary face and is located between the second aperture boundary faces, and in the regions between the first and the second aperture boundary faces there is provided a projection and a recess, respectively, which are facing respectively towards and away from the third aperture boundary face, wherein the projection between on of the first aperture boundary faces and one of the second aperture boundary faces is formed by the first aperture boundary face being offset inwardly of the aperture in relation to the second aperture boundary face, and the recess between the other of the first aperture boundary faces and the other of the second aperture boundary faces is formed by the first aperture boundary face being offset outwardly of the aperture in relation to the second aperture boundary face.
2. A ratcheting nut wrench as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first aperture boundary faces are located between the second aperture boundary faces which are situated outside and inside said first aperture boundary faces and at least one pair of which are interconnected by means of the third aperture boundary face.
3. A ratchet nut wrench comprising jaws spaced apart by an aperture and having first parallel aperture boundary faces and second aperture boundary faces connected to the first aperture boundary faces and making an angle with said first aperture boundary faces and with one another, characterized by a third aperture boundary face which makes an angle with the second aperture boundary faces and is located between two of the second aperture boundary faces, and in the region between the first and the second aperture boundary faces of at least one of the pairs of such surfaces there is provided a projection and a recess respectively which is facing towards or away from the third aperture boundary face.
