(No Model.) 2 Sheets-Sheet 2. I. E. PALMER.
BAND FOR PACKAGES.
No. 350,149, Patented Oct. 5, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT FEicE.
ISAAC E. PALMER, OF MIDDLETO\VN, CONNECTICUT.
BAND FOR PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,149, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed August 27, 1885. Serial No. 175,523. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, of d'liddlctown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Imp rovementin Bands for Packages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to bands whereby Piece-goods, when folded so as to form packages each containiuga determined quantity, may be held securely or confined, and which are of such construction that they may be readily uul'astened when it is desired to open the package to retail goods therefrom, and which may be readily reapplied and may securely confine the package of reduced size after a portion of the goods have been sold and the band reapplied to the package.
The invention consists, cssentially,in aband for packages composed ot'two elements-muncly, a ilexi ble or folding member or strap adapted to embrace one side and the edges of a package, and an extensible connection between the ends of such member or strap and detachably secured at one or both ends thereof.
In carrying out my invention I may make the flexible or folding member or strap of tough paper or card-board, which will readily bend 01' told, so as to closely embrace the package. and which maybe re-cntorced at the ends, and
at such re-cnl'orccd ends I provide tongues,
which maybe cut from the ends themselves, and with which an elastic band, made otindiarubber or other material, may be detachably engaged, in order to draw the two ends of the flexible member orstrap toward each other and contract it upon a package of goods.
In the accmnpauying drawings, Figure l is a plan of a package of goods having myinr proved band applied thereto. Fig. 2 isan end view thereof, looking in a direction cndwisc of the band. Fig. 3 is a side view, looking in a direction crosswise ol' the band. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the band as contracted about the package after it has been reduced in size by the sale ol'some of the goods. Fig. orepresents the piece of goods as opened out preparatory to exhibiting or selling a portion thereof. FigsGaud'T arerespcctivelyaplan and section upon a larger scale of the end portion of the flex ible or folding member or strap. Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing a band having a ilcxible or folding member or strap ol' slightly-modified form and Figs. 5) and 10 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2, but showing the ends of the flexible or folding member or strap as joined by an extensible connection consisting of a cord passed or wound to and fro upon the tongues of the mcnr ber or strap and detachably connecting them.
Similar letters of reference designate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
' A designates a piece of goods, which in putting up ready for market is first folded, as shown in Fig. 5, so that each fold or layer will represent one yard or other definite quantity of the goods, and which is afterward doubled or folded one or more times upon itself, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to form a compact and small package. 4
My improved band consists of a flexible 0r l'olding member or strap, 13, which is adapted to embrace one side and the edges of the pack age of goods and conform to the shape thereof, and an extensible connection, 0, which extends between the two end portions of the member or strap B. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the straight portion of the member or strap 13, which is on the opposite side of the package from the connection 0, may consist of a flat strip, B, of card-board orother comparatively stiff and rigid material, united to the flexible portions of the band B, whichcontinc the edges of the package; or such still" strip B may be scoured upon and serve to re-euforcc the long flexible band B, of tough paper or of cloth.
In the example of my invention shown in Fig. 8 the band B consists of comparatively thin paper, cloth, or other material, and is destitute ol' the thicker straight portion B shown in Figs. 8 and 4. I have represented the member or strap I3 as provided at the ends with re enforcing pieces 13*, which may be glued or cemented thereto, and which form a portion of increased thickness. In these por tions of increased thickness are cut slots or openings 7) of the form shown in Figs. 1, (i, and 7,whercbyare produced tongues b,with which the extensible band C may be engaged, as shown best in Fig. 1.
In lieu of cutting the tongues from the same integral piece which composes the strap 13 and its reent'orcing pieces 13*, I may provide the ends of the member or strap B with tongues otherwise l'ormcd therefrom or secured thereto.
In the example of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 8 the extensible connection 0 consists of a simple elastic band of indiarubber or other suitable material, which is slipped over the tongues b at opposite ends of the member or strap 13; but in the example of my invention shown in Figs. 9 and 10 the extensible connection 0 consists of a cord, which is wound or passed to and fro under thetongu'es b at opposite ends of the member or strap B, and thereby serves to detachably connect such ends together. After the goods are folded or doubled, as shown in Fig. 2, to make the package of the desired form, the flexible or folding member or strap B is lapped around the package to embrace it, as shownin Fig. 3, and the extensible connection is applied to connect the ends of such member or strap either by stretching an elastic band over the tongues at opposite ends of the strap or by binding or passing a cord, as shown in Fig. 9, over said tongues in the opposite ends of the strap. \Vhen the elastic band is used as a connection, it will, by its elasticity, serve to draw or contract the flexible member or strap B tightly around the package, and will confine the package of reduced size and until all the goods therein are sold with the same facility and tightness as it confined the package when entire.
In Fig. 4 I have represented the band as upon the package of reduced size after a portion of the goods have been sold therefrom, and it will be there seen that the ends of the flexible member or strap Bare drawn somewhat nearer together than they are in Fig; 3, and the same also is true of Fig. 8, wherein I have shown the end portions of the band or strap B by dotted lines as drawn nearer together, so as to con fine a package of less thickness.
When the goods are to be removed from the band, I may, instead of detaching the elastic connection from one end of the band or strap, simply stretch the band, as the elastic connecgion will permit, and withdraw the goods thererom.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A band for packages consisting of two elementsnamely, a flexible or folding member or strap adapted to embrace one side and the edges of the package, and an extensible connection between the ends of such member or strap and detachably secured to one or both ends thereof, substantially as herein described.
2. Aband for packages consisting of aflexible or folding member or strap provided at one or both ends with integral tongues b, extending inward from the ends and formed by slotting the member or strap, as described, and an extensible connection engaging said tongue or tongues and serving to connect the two ends of said member or strap, substantially as herein set forth.
3. A band for packages consisting of the flexible or folding member or strap B, provided at the ends with tongues b,which extend inward from the ends of the strap and are formed by slotting the same, as described, and
the endless elastic band 0, connecting the ends of the flexible member or strap, substantially as herein set forth.
' ISAAC n. PALMER.
