lINiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY ll. JOHNSON, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
SAMPLE PACKAGE OR WRAPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,090, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed May 28, 1888. Serial No. 275,313. (No model.) I
To all wiz/om, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, HENRY H. JOHNSON, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and uset ul Improvement in Sample Packages or lVrappers, of which the followingI is a specification.
My invention consists ot' an improvement in sample packages or wrappers and the means ot securing the contents of the same.
The drawings accompanying this specification show, in Figure l, a view of the outside package or sample covering or wrapper when the wrapper is opened to its fullest extent. Fig. 9 is a view of the inside of the covering in the same position; Fig'. 3, a perspective view showing the covering applied to a package and partially closed; Fig. T., the covering applied to a package and closed and secured. Fig. 5 is a modified 'form of the package.
The package-covering consists ot' a single piece ot' canvas, leather, or other suitable material re-enforced at all edges, calculated to overlap and to be secured in locking the package with re-enforcing strips of the same material or other suitable material.
In the drawings l have designated the body of the wrapper by the letter A. To opposite side edges ot this piece A are secured re-enforcing strips a c, in one oi' which re-eni'orcing stripsl secure a row ot' staples, L Z1, in the other ot' which is a correspondingI row ot eyelets, (Z d. On a line intermediate to the two side edges to which are secured these re-entorcing strips I secure at either end ot' the package-wrapping short re-entorcing strips e e, in which are t'ormed two or more eyelet-holes, ff, and to the ends ol' these .re-enforcing strips are secured staples g g, to one of which is secured a strap, 71, at the outer end of which is secured a metal re-entorce, fz', in which is formed an eyelet, j. This strap is intended, as shown in Figs. 3 and i, to pass through the staples on the edges ot' the wrapper at'ter the eyelets have been passed over the staples and to be locked to the terminal staple g in any suitable way, as by a padlock, lead seal, or any other suitable, locking or securing device, as shown in Fig. al. At a point on the end edges of the covering or wrapper intermediate between the re-ent'orcing strips o c and the central line, to which are secured the re-enforcing strips e, are secured short re-enforces Zt Zr., in which are formed eyelets Z l. The purpose of these eyelets is sufficiently shown in Fig. 3. They are intended as a means of securing the loose flap between the overlapping and locking edges at the end of the package.
' In making up the package, as shown in Fig. 3, the wrapping or cover is placed around the sample or package to be secured. The staples b on the strip a are passed through the eyelets d on the strip c and the eyelets of the short re-enforces 7c 7c brought over the terminal staples in the ends of t-he line of staples Z2 b, as shown in Fig. 3. The remaining flap of the end of the package is then turned up over the terminal staples and the lockingst-rap h passed through these staples and the eyeletj passed over the terminal staple g and locked or secured in any suitable way.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modiiied form of the package, in which the sides and ends, instead of being formed of flexible material, are made of rigid material hinged at all points where flexibility is desired by joints of leather, canvas, or other Aflexible material.
It may be desirable in some instances for carrying a lsmall package of the kind described to leave a certain amount of slack, as shown at m, Fig. 5, to be used as a handle.
I do not confine myseltl to a single piece of material, as in. making larger coverings two or more pieces joined together may be necessary to make the required size; nor` do I con- `line myself to re-entorcing the edges, as the use ot' heavy material would make this unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1sl. A wrapper for sample and other packages, consisting of a sheet of flexible material provided at one edge with eyelets, at the opposite edge with staples arranged to pass through said eyelets when the edges are overlapped, and at one end edge with a strap so positioned that when the wrapper is folded the strap may pass through the staples, and at the other end edge with means for fastening and securing the free end ot the strap, substantially as described.
2. A wrapper `tor sample and other packages, consisting ot' a sheet olf flexible material having re-enforeing strips on its two side edges, one oi. said strips being provided with eyelets and the other with staples arranged to pass through said eyelets when the edges are overlapped, and at the end edges with short re-ent'oreing strips parallel with and intermediate the side strips, one ol said side strips provided with a strap adapted to pass through the staples whenthe wrapper is t'ol ded, and the other end strip with means t'or tastening and securing the lree end of the strap, substantially as deserihed.
A Wrapper for sample and other pael@ ages, eonsisting of a sheet of flexible material provided at one of its side edges with a series of staples, at the opposite side edge and end, edges with series of eyelets, said eyelets hein g relatively arranged to register with eaeh other and with the staples 'when the wrapper is folded, and a` strap seeured near one end edge and arranged to loeli the staples within Ythe 1 eyelets when the wrapper is .folde l, and a loop l or eyelet in the tree end ot' the strap t'or en gaging a staple near the other end edge, sul)- stanti ally as and for the purposes deserilied.
et. A wrapper for sample and other paek ages, Consisting' ot a sheet ot' flexible material yhm'ing re-en ioreing strips um on its side edges, in one otf whieh is secured a row olf staples and in the other a eorrespoiuling row of eyelets, lie-enforcing strips e e at Central points between the strips (L e and parallel therewith, re-entoreing strips 7b' at the end edges intermediate the strips (t e and e e, said strips e and 7: hein g provided with eyel ets, and a loeking-strap attached to one oli the strips e, and adapted to pass through the staples when the wrapper folded and he loelced to a staple in the other strip e, stllistantia'lhv as deserihed.
