Description

0. F. RUMPPL Leather-Chains.
-VNO. 216,533 Patented June 17, 1879.
' [NVE/VTOR WITNESSES:
I III/ I V ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
CHARLES F. RUMPP, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER CHAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,533, dated June 17, 1879; application filed April 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES F. RUMPP, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather Chains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exactidescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specifica tion, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the chain. Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the links of the chain; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the method of attaching the links together so as to form the chain.
My invention has for its object to provide a.
flat chain composed of leather or other equivalent flexible material, adapted principally for use as suspenders for satchels, fans, and other articles carried or worn upon the person.
My improvement consists of a flat chain composed of a series of flexible links of leather or equivalent material, each of said links consisting of a strip or piece shaped with wide or enlarged ends having transverse slots and con tracted or narrow centers, and said links being combined together in the manner hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A in Fig. 2 represents a strip of leather or equivalent flexible material having enlarged or wide ends a a with oblong transverse slots a a and contracted middle, c of less width than said ends a.
In Fig. 1 is shown atchain composed of said links, which are put together in the manner plainly shown in Fig. 3, the first link of the series being doubled, so as to register with the next, one end of the next link being folded lengthwise, to enable it to be passed through said registering-openings in said first link.
The second link thus passed through the first is then turned and folded like the first, and other links added in like manner until the chain is completed. The final link of the series is then fastened in any suitable manner, as by pasting, stitching, or by the employment of a binding-strip, B.
If desired, hooks O O or clips of any suitable character maybe added, as shown in the drawings; but these devices form no part of my present invention.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. The links A, of leather or equivalent flexible material, having enlarged or wide ends a a with. transverse oblong slots a a and middle portions 0. of less width than said ends.
2. A chain composed of links of leather or equivalent flexible material, said links having wide or enlarged ends a with transverse slots at and middle portions of less width than said ends, connected substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of April, 1879.
