Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL SIMON, OF MILLERSBURG, OHIO.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIPICATIOTV forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,401, dated June 8, 1886.
Application filed April 6, 1886. Serial No. 197,953. (No model.)
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL SIMON, of Millersburg, in the county of Holmes and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the combination a portable attachment designed more especially for travelers, the device being so arranged that it may be quickly and easily secured to the keeper of an ordinary lock, and being so secured will effectually prevent the opening of the door from the outside.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a view of the inner face of a portion of a door and its casing, representing my improved attachi'ient as in position upon the keeper, a portion of the attachment and the keeper being broken away to disclose the location of the upper clamping-screw. Fig. 2 is a side view of the keeper and attachment, the buffer of the rear screw being shown in section to disclose its construction; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lock, the attachment being shown in central section, taken on line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
The attachment constituting the subject matter of this application consists, essentially, of a malleableiron plate, A, formed with cor ner pieces a a and central flange, b, a horizontal ridge, 0, and bosses d d. Each of the bosses d is centrally apertured, and the aperture so formed is threaded, in order that it may be engaged by clamping-screws B B. The ridge 0 projects beyond the rear of the plate A, and in this projection there is a threaded socket, in which there is mounted a screw, 0, upon the lower end of which there is arranged an iron or rubber buffer, D, that is secured to the screw by means of a swivel-joint, 6. At the forward end of the ridge 0 there is a fourth aperture, in which a fourth screw, E, is mounted, the plate being curved outward from each end toward the forward end of the ridge 0, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1.
The attachmentv described is secured to the keeper F of the ordinary form of rim-lock G, the attachment being held in place by means of the clampingscrews B B, one of which is forced against the under side of the keeper, while the other is forced against the upper side of such keeper. The screw 0 is then turned so that its buffer will be brought to bear against the casing of the door at a point just beyond the keeper, and the screw E is advanced until its blunt point strikes against the face of the lock, so that there will be no possible play between the attachment and the door, and the attachment being placed in position it will be impossible to open the door from the outside of the apartment.
Such a device as I have described constitutes a cheap, efficient, and durable attachment applicable to the ordinary form of rim-lock, and will be found to bea most useful addition to the travelers outfit, as well as an exceedingly useful article for general use in private houses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for looks consisting, essentially, of a plate, A, having corner-pieces a and a centfal strengthening-ridge, c, and clampingscrews B B, O, and E, arranged substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the herein described lock attachment consisting, essentially, ofa-plate, A, formed with cornerpieces a a, a flange, b, ridge 0, bosses d d, and provided with screws B B. G, and E, the screw G being in turn provided with a buffer, D, connected thereto by a swiveljoint, 0, substantially as described.
