To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN Kai's, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of VVyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Key-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a key fastener and has for its object to provide a device which may be applied to a door and is adapted for receiving and holding part of a door key to prevent the key from being turned in a lock. In accomplishing this object, I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and. illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of part of a door, showing a fastener constructed according to my invention, and a key applied thereto. Fig. 11 is an enlarged perspective view of the key and fastener, part of the door being shown in dotted lines.
Referring more in detail to the parts :1 designates a key of any ordinary construction except that its shank 2 is formed in two sections, one of which is pivotally connected with the other by a pin, or like device, 3.
f designates the fastener which comprises a head member 5, having a screw 6 rigidly connected therewith and adapted for attachment to a door frame. The head 5 is bifur cated and preferably composed of spring metal so that the legs 7 may yield to admit the key'shank therebetween. Each leg preferably comprises a recess member 8 and outwardly fiarred end lip 9, which, in combination, form a recess 10 for inclosing the key shank and a mouth 11 for receiving the shank prior to the spreading of the legs to admit the shank to the recess.
In applying the device to a door, the fastener is threaded into the door-frame at the side of the key-hole, so that the recess 10 will extend at right angles to the key hole when the fastener is set. When the door is locked the head of the key is usually extended at right angles to the key-hole so that it cannot be withdrawn until it has been turned a part of a revolution in the lock. With a key at right angles to the key hole, the movable part of the shank may be bent laterally and moved into the mouth of the fastener, pressure on the shank spreading the legs 7 to allow the shank to pass and enter the recess 10. It is apparent that when in this position the key cannot be turned to unlock the door until, the shank has been removed from the fastener, and that in this way a dwelling or building may be protected against the manipulation of a key by a burglar or person on the outside, as it would be impossible for the key to be turned by applying fasteners '01" the like to the head end of the key.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is The combination with a door frame and a lock carried by the frame and having a key opening, of a fastener attached to the frame and comprising spring lips having flaring ends forming a mouth, and having a keeper socket back of the mouth, and a key comprising a ward portion and a handle pivotally connected with the ward portion and adapted for projection through the fastener mouth and into said socket when the ward portion is in locking posit-ion.
