Definitions
- This invention relates to hair clamps of the type which, for example, can be heated on a separate heated tube and then subsequently applied to a roller with hair coiled thereon.
- a clamp which consists of two hinged parts, each of which is provided with a metal plate having a synthetic or plasticlike material arranged at the inside thereof, said parts being pressed together by a spring and being provided with means for opening the clamp.
- the metal plates serve to conduct accumulated heat more quickly to those parts of the inner surface of the clamp Where contact is made with the roller.
- the objects of the invention are achieved by the use of a feature whereby the plates mentioned above project with narrow inwardly directed parts through the layer of synthetic material, which inwardly directed parts extend perhaps a short distance beyond the layer of synthetic material.
- the plate comes into direct contact with the heating tube via the inwardly directed parts, this contact being insured by the feature that these parts project inwards a short distance beyond the inner wall of the clamp.
- the heating of the synthetic material in which heat must also be accumulated, takes place from the inside via the metal plate as well as directly by radiation or conduction from the heating tube. It has been found that in this way, a very rapid heating of the clamp is possible, and good heat distribution is retained during the transfer of the heat.
- the inwardly directed parts of the plate, via which the heat is transferred to the plate, are preferably present at the ends of the clamp, and thus of the plate, in consequence of which these ends exercise no adverse influence on the hair on the roller since the roller as a rule is thickest in the middle and tapers towards the ends.
- the plate preferably has a thickness which is at least equal to the thickness of the layer of synthetic material between the plate and the inner surface of the clamp.
- the plate preferably has a considerably greater thickness.
- each of the hinged parts can have a cover member which is hinged at an edge thereof and is integral therewith, which cover member can be folded against the outside of the parts of the clamp and can be retained in this position by a spring.
- the cover member may comprise a part adapted to cover the outside of the corresponding part of the clamp, each plate then being enclosed between the cover member and the clamp.
- the plate can be fitted after the clamp has been made, for which purpose the clamp is provided with openings for the inwardly directed parts. It is of course also possible to embed the plate in the mass of synthetic or plasticlike material during the molding of the clamp.
- FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a clamp provided in accordance with the invention.
- FIG. 2 shows, in side view, the clamp body in open position, without its clamping spring and without the metal plates;
- FIG. 3 is a bottom view of the clamp of FIGS. 1 and 2;
- FIG. 4 is a top view of the metal plate
- FIG. 5 is an end view of the plate.
- the clamp shown in FIG. 1 consists of two parts or elements 1 and 2, which are pressed together by a spring 3.
- Mover members 1a and 2a having handles 4 and 5, are pivotally connected with elements 1 and 2 at 6 and may be of the same material as the latter and integral therewith.
- Handles 4 and 5 are L-shaped parts extending perpendicularly from the cover members.
- a metal plate (aluminum, steel or the like) is supported on or in each of the parts 1 and 2 of the clamp, as shown by dotted lines 7 in FIG. 1. These metal plates constitute heat reservoirs.
- the clamp consists of parts forming a one-piece unit. As appears in FIG. 3, openings 8 are provided at the ends of the parts 1 and 2, and the parts 1 and 2 are formed for accommodating in face-toface relation and with a close fit the metal plates 10 shown in FIGS. 4 and 5.
- Each plate 10 has a suitable curved form (corresponding to that of elements 1 and 2 and the inner surfaces of the latter) and includes legs or projections which extend through the corresponding openings 8.
- the cover members 1a and 2a respectively have a curved surface 12 which corresponds to the curvature on the outside of the related plate 10.
- These parts 4 and 5 are constructed in such a way that in the position in which they are folded against the outside of the clamp parts 1 and 2 respectively they cover the latter fully, so that the plate 10 is completely sandwiched or enclosed therebetween. This is necessary to avoid heat losses. It is also preferred for the plates to be in face-to-face contact with the surfaces of elements 1 and 2 to avoid irregular heat transfer due to air gaps.
- the parts '1 and 2 of the clamp are provided with lateral flanges 9 between which the cover members and metal plates fit.
- the legs 11 extend through the openings 8 and therefore, contact with the heating tube (not shown) takes place via these legs.
- These legs are relatively small occupying less than 5% and even less of the inner surface area of elements 1 and 2 so that heat transfer to the hair of the user will normally be through the elements 1 and 2 alone.
- Elements 1 and 2 may be of conventional plastic-like materials such as polyethylene, rubber or the like which has a low thermal conductivity relative to plates 10.
- the elements 1 and 2 are preferably of arcuate crosssection to accommodate rollers or beating tubes.
- the legs in the metal plates extend at least to the surface of the elements 1 and 2 and perhaps a few hundredths of an inch therebeyond.
- plate 10 may have a length of about two inches between its ends whereat legs 11 are located and a thickness of about to A; of an inch, parts 1 and 2 having a slightly lesser thickness.
- a hair clamp adapted for being heated by a source of heat and for being subsequently removed from said source and applied to a member which has hair engaged thereon, said clamp comprising first and second elements adapted to accommodate said member therebetween, means hingeably connecting said elements to form a clamplike structure, metal members supported on said elements and having a heat conductivity which is large relative to that of said elements to serve as a heat reservoir to dissipate heat through said elements for application to hair on said member, and cover members respectively hinged to said elements for selectively sandwiching the metal members against said elements.
- a hair clamp adapted for being heated by a source of heat and for being subsequently removed from said source and applied to a member which has hair engaged thereon, said clamp comprising first and second elements adapted to accommodate said member tiherebetween, means hingeably connecting said elements to form a clamplike structure, heat reservoir means carried by said elements and adapted for making direct contact with said source of heat and to dissipate said heat at least in part through said elements for application to said hair on said member, said heat reservoir means having a heat conductivity which is large relatively to that of said elements, said elements being provided with surfaces for selectively engaging said source of heat and said member, said heat reservoir means including metal members supported on said elements and including projections extending through said elements at least to the surfaces thereof, and cover members respectively hinged to said elements for selectively sandwiohing the metal members against the said elements.
- a clamp as claimed in claim 2 wherein the metal members are plates corresponding in shape to said surfaces and of a thickness exceeding the spacing thereof from said surfaces, said plates and elements being in faceto-face relation for the transfer of heat from the plates to said elements.
- a clamp as claimed in claim 3 comprising handles on said cover members and wherein said elements and cover members are of the same material.
- a clamp as claimed in claim 2 comprising spring means urging the cover members against said metal members and elements and further urging the elements together.
