FENCE.
Patented. May; 18,A 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GERHARD BSING, OF NEV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.342,282, dated May 18, 1886.
Application filed February 8,1886. Serial No. 191.?39. (Nomodel.)
.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERHARD BsINor', a resident ofthe city of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Division-Fences, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a fence for dividing the party-lines of lots in cities; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a means by which there are no fenceposts required, second, to afford facilities by which the fence will not be liable to deterioration or decay by reason of dalnpness, Src., acting on parts generally placed in the ground; third, to provide a means by which the dividing-fence between parties will occupy the least possible portion ofthe ground; fourth, to provide a means by which the base of my fence, which is of artificial stone, will form the side of a gutter for draining the yard or lot. I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a section of my improved fence, showing the same anchored to the side of the house on one of the lots which it divides. Fig.
` 2 is a section showing the fence placed on a line of lots where there are no houses and anchcred from the ground. Fig. 3 is a side elevation; Fig. 4, a plan View. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section of base of felice.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
An artificial stone, S, about two and onehalf inches wide, nine inches deep, and thirtysix inches long, is placed about six inches in the ground on the line of division of lots. This stone S is provided with a hole in center of same, with square recess on bottom side to receive the bolt h, which secures the wooden base b to the stone S, as shown. The top of the artificial stone is also provided with the hal f-round projection p, to tinto acorresponding groove made in wooden base b, to maintain the base b in position. The wooden base b is secured to the artificial stone S, as shown, and receives the boards o of the fence, which are maintained in position on the base Z) by the molding m, secured on either side of the boards o to the base b, as shown. To the top of boards o, which may be of any height desired, is secured the cap c, which is grooved out to receive the boards o, as shown. rlhis cap c is beveled to shed the water, and finished off with molding, as may be desired. Vhen the fence is placed a short distance from the side of the house, the fence is anchored by placing rods r from the side of house to cap c, as shown in Fig. l. Vhen the fence is placed so that it cannot be anchored from the house, a brick pier, l?, is placed on one side, and a short distance from the fence, and a rod, d, is secured to the brick pier P and to the cap c of the fence, as shown in Fig. 2, which braces and maintains the fence in position.
Having thus describcd'iny invention of an improved division-fence, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a division-fence, the combination of the articial stone S, provided with the projection p, with the base b, bolt h, molding m, boards o, cap c, and a brace-rod, all substantially as set forth, and for the purposes specified.
GERHARD BSING.
