Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. Bus- KIRK, citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
rlCliis invention relates to improvements in fence posts, more particularly to combination posts formed partly of concrete and partly of wood, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the etlioiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character formed partly of concrete and partly of wood with the concrete portion embedded in the ground and projecting above the same and with the wooden portion secured to the concrete portion by a novel arrangement of clamping bolts.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein provision is made for preventing` the settling of moisture between the wood and concrete portions of the posts.
`With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of one of the improved posts; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail illustrating a slight modification in the construction.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved post comprises a base portion 10 of concrete of any suitable proportion of ingredients but preferably about one part cement and three parts of sand, but these proportions may be varied as circumstances may require.
rlhe improved post may be employed in the building of ordinary fences or also employed for supporting telephone and telegraph poles, trolley line poles and the like, and the base member 10 will be varied in size to correspond to the weight and size of the post which is to be supported there- Specification of Letters Patent.

on. For an ordinary fence post the base member 10 will be embedded in the ground about eighteen inches and project above the ground about nine inches, and will likewise be formed with its upper face inclining toward one side, as shown.
The wood portion of the post is represented at 11 and is preferably reduced where it laps upon the base 10, as represented at 12, thus producing a lateral shoulder 13 which engages t-he base 10 at its highest point, the object to be hereafter explained.
Embedded in the base 10, are bolts 14, any required number being employed, but generally two will be suiiicient, as shown. The bolts 1li are provided with square heads 15 at their inner ends. The base portions 10 are cast in suitable molds, and when thus cast the bolts 14 are embedded in the plastic material, and before the bolts are inserted, a holding block represented at 16, is inserted in the plastic material in position to enable the square heads 15 to bear thereon, and then when the base member is completed the bolt-s 14 will be eectually prevented from rotation by the engagement of the heads with the square holding blocks. This is an important feature of applicants device and materially strengthens and stiffens the connection between the bolts and the base, and prevents their displacement after the material of the base has thoroughly set The bolts 14 extend through the reduced portion 12 of the posts and are secured by holding nut-s and washers 17, as shown. As before stated, the shoulder 13 of the post bears upon the base 10 at its highest point or at the upper edge of the inclined upper end. By this means the material of the base slopes constantly away from the post so that an etlicient drainage is provided so that rain, snow and ice will not settle and remain between the post and the base. This is also an important feature of applicants device and materially increases the life of the post by preventing all tendency of the wood portion of the post to rot through the influence of moisture.
rlhe concrete portion of the post is practically indestructible and is not affected by the moisture either in the ground or above the ground, consequently when once erected is not deteriorated by the elements, and when the wood portion of the post decays,
this can be renewed, at small expense and without destroying the bases. r.lhe wood portion of the post being located entirely above the ground is not subjected to decay from the moisture of the soil, consequently the wood portion of the improved post will ontlast ordinary wood posts.
ln Fig. 3 a slight modification is shown consisting in dispensing with the squared heads l5 of the bolts 14 and the holding blocks 1G and bending the inner terminals oli' the bolts laterally as shown at 18 and embedding the bolts in the plastic material when the post is molded. By this means the bolts are held from turning when the nuts are applied.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed. as new is:
l. A post comprising a base of concrete having its upper end sloping continuously toward one side the :tull size ot the post and without obstruction to retain moisture or other matter, an upper member ot wood with the lower portion reduced whereby a lateral shoulder is produced and bearing by the reduced portion against the high side of the base with the shouldered portion overhanging the sloping upper end of the same. 2. A post comprising a base adapted to be partially embedded in the ground and with its upper end sloping continuously toward one side the full width of the post and without obstruction to retain moisture or other matter, an upper member of wood having the lower portion reduced and bearing by the reduced portion against the high. side ot' the base with the unreduced portion oVerhanging the sloping upper end of the base, and fastening means for connecting the upper member to the base.
