PATENT OFFICE.
HALF TO BERT BERTRAND, OF CASS CITY, MICHIGAN.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,344, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed December 31, 1903. Qerial No. 1537,3 13. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MICHAEL T. CARoLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cass City, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fence-posts. r
The object of the invention is to provide a fence-post of cement or similar plastic material possessing great strength and durability, means being incorporated in the same to prevent cracking either in a vertical or horizontal direction.
A further object is to form post of this character in such a manner that but a minimum amount of material is required to construct a post of great strength.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence-post constructed in accordance with the invention and showing short sections of the line-wires of the fence in place. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4c is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the body of the post, which is constructed of cement or other plastic material and is substantially triangular in horizontal section. In the rear side of that portion namely, the body of the post--which is to be above ground is formed a verticallydisposed channel 2, which is V shaped, as shown. The lower end or base 1 of the post which enters the ground is solid. The apex or front edge 3 of the post is flattened, and in Said flattened apex is formed a 561168 of V shaped notches 4., which are of such depth as to communicate or intersect with the V-shaped channel 2 in the rear side of the post.
In each side of the post forming the walls of the V-shaped channel 2 is arranged a rod or wire 5, which is bent forwardly at its upper or. looped end across through the apex or front ofthe post. A horizontally-disposed wire 6 is bent to the shape of the post and connects the side wires or rods below the series of V-shaped notches, this wire 6 and the forwardly-bent upper or looped end of the wire 5 bracing the walls of the post forming the V-shaped channel against vertical cracking or splitting, while the vertical portions of the rod or wire 5 prevent horizontal cracking or breaking of the post. The lower ends of the wire 5 pass through the base of the post, as shown.
The V-shaped notches 4 in the front edge of the post may be arranged in any suitable positions on the post and are here shown as being arranged closer together near the base of the post than at its upper portion. In the notches 4 are arranged the line-wires 6 of the fence, said wires occupying a position at the extreme inner end of the notch, as shown. A locking-wire 7 is arranged in the V-shaped channel in the back of the post and passes down through the same in front of the line-wires of the fence, thereby securely locking said linewires in the notches. In applying the line-wires to the post the upper wire is first engaged with the upper notch and the locking-wire passed down from the top of the post in front of the same. The nextlinewire is now placed in position and the lock-.
ing-wire pushed down in front of the same, and so on until all of the fence-wires have been successively placed in position and locked.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A post of the character described, comprising a body having a solid integral base, the former of V form and the latter of triangular form in horizontal cross-section, the vertex portion of said body being provided With transverse notches communicating With the channel thereof, the upper and lower-notches of the series being arranged, respectively, below and above the upper end of the body and upper end of the base, said upper end of the base forming the bottom Wall of the channel of the body and a shelf, a fastening-Wire arranged in said channel to engage portions of the line-Wires inserted in said notches and resting at its lower end on said shelf, substantially V-shaped horizontal metallic braces embedded in the post and base above the said upper and lower nesses.
