Definitions
- the following specification discloses a pivotally mounted window sash which is provided with friction means adapted to hold the window in adjusted position, and with means for raising and lowering the window as it reaches its fully-closed position, to thereby hold the window in its closed position, and with the sash in tight sealing engagement with the frame.
- the raising and lowering means comprises rollers on the sash or frame which cooperate with studs on the other member, the rollers and studs being so positioned that the sash is caused to raise and lower as described above.
- a manually operated handle is provided with a lever arm, the handle being mounted on the sash, and the lever arm cooperating with an inclined slot in a plate mounted on the frame, thereby exerting leverage in the closing direction so that lifting of the window sash is accomplished with but slight manual effort.
- This invention relates to an arrangement adapted to close and lock pivot-suspended windows of the type mounted in a sash for tilting about substantially horizontal axle journals.
- the present invention has as its object to produce a window suspended in pivot means wherein locking means mounted in pairs replace the previous espagnolettes and in spite of the absence of the latter render a satisfactory sealing around the entire window.
- the arrangement according to the invention is substantially characterized in that in the sash and inthe frame are provided co-operating guide members which guide the window during its closing motion in such a manner, that at the end of the closing motion which, for example, is effected by a locking handle engaging a curve or the like, the sash is caused to carry out an upward motion which turns into a downward motion to a locking position.
- FIGURE 1 is a vertical cross-sectional view of a window sash and cooperating frame, showing my invention, the sash being shown fully closed in this figure;
- FIGURE 2 is a 'view similar to FIGURE 1, but showing the window sash partly open;
- FIGURE 3 is another view similar to FIGURES 1 and 2, but showing the window sash when it has been pivoted through a full 180 degrees;
- FIGURE 4 is a perspective view showing particularly the frame-mounted elements of my invention. 7
- FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 4, but showing particularly the sash-mounted elements.
- FIGURE 6 is an exploded view of one of the pivot elements and the mounting means therefor.
- FIGS. 1 to 5 and 8 show a window unit wherein a frame 1 carries a horizontal axis fora sash 2 mounted to be tilted into and out of open position.
- the sash 2 comprises two sash portions 2a and 2b supporting the window glass.
- On the inner sash portion 2a are rigidly mounted the fittings which by co-operation with supplementary fittings mounted on the frame 1 are required for effecting the locking of the sash.
- the fittings for the window shown comprise two hinges, two lift rolls, two locking rolls and a locking mechanism to be turned by a handle.
- the main components of a hinge 4 are two mounting plates 5, 6, a brake housing 7 and a brake drum 8 (see FIG. 6).
- the brake housing 7 is on its outer bottom surface provided with a guide 7a adapted to engage in a longitudinal groove 5a in the mounting plate 5 and is rivetted (or screwed) therein by means of two washers 9, in such a manner, that the brake housing 7 is displaceable in relation to the mounting plate 5, which latter is intended to be secured in the frame by three screws 10.
- the brake drum 8- is mounted which is provided with two parallel through grooves 8a and 8b.
- an adjustable expanding means 80 is mounted by which the frictional force of the brake drum against the inner surface of the brake housing can be adjusted by a screw driver or spanner.
- the other groove 80 is engaged by a cam 6a mounted on the mounting plate 6.
- Said mounting plate 6 is adapted to be screwed into the sash by three screws 11.
- a connection of this type between the different hinge halves does not require great accuracy in axial direction, and, besides, the sash can be mounted and dismounted very easily.
- the sash is tilted about 90, so that the radial direction of the cam coincides with a notch provided in the surface of the brake housing whereafter the sash can be lifted out of the bearing in the brake drum.
- the sash is raised and lowered respectively whereby the brake housing 7 in its entirety is displaced in the longitudinal groove on the mounting plate 5.
- the said raising and lowering motion respectively is controlled by two lift rolls 12 one mounted at each side of the sash and abovethe centre of the axis (FIG. 5).
- Each of said housings 13 is rigidly secured on a side piece of the sash portion 2a of the window and provided with a transverse curve-shaped groove.
- a stud 15 (FIG. 5) rigidly mounted on the respective opposite side of the frame engages said groove upon angular movements of the sash to closed position and co-operates with the lift roll 12.
- the stud 15 is rigidly connected to a support plate 16 which in its turn is adjustably fixed in position by screws passing through vertical slots in the plate and screwed into the frame through two longitudinal grooves in the frame.
- the plate 16 is transversely rifiied on its lower surface.
- Studs 17 are rigidly mounted on the side pieces of the sash below its horizontal tilting axis. In the embodiment shown the appearance of the studs 17 does not differ from that of the studs 15.
- a bearing casing 18 which is rigidly mounted by two screws 19 in the frame and comprises a transverse shaft 20 with a locking roll 21 movably mounted there on.
- the locking roll 21 is designed as a toothed wheel with circular are shaped tooth gaps, in the same manner as the lift roll 12.
- the lifting movement effected automatically by tightening the sash may require a considerable force. It is, therefore, suitable to arrange a force exerting means, in this case a locking mechanism with a handle.
- the said mechanism comprises a handle 22 (FIG. mounted rotatably in a usual way in the sash portion 2a of the window, which handle with its end enclosed in the sash portion is rigidly connected with a screw-shaped locking leaf 23 adapted during the locking moment to engage an oblique groove 24! in a locking plate 24 rigidly mounted in the frame (FIG. 4).
- the locking leaf 23 presses the sash to abut against the stop ledgers 3 of the frame.
- the force required is reduced and the lifting motion becomes scarcely noticeable.
- the lock housing 25 rigidly mounted in the sash portion 2a is provided with two guide cams 25a adapted to engage two opposite guide grooves 24a in the locking plate 24.
- the locking plate 24, furthermore, is provided with two locking grooves 24c into which upon turning the handle a locking pin 22a rigidly mounted in the handle 22 alternatively engages and thereby locks the sash in either of two different ventilating positions.
- the dilferent fitting units co-operate with each other during the locking moment.
- the lift rolls will at this time have engaged the studs.
- the sash Upon continued turning of the handle into its definite locking position the sash passes the maximum lifting limit and assumes a lowered inner rest position thanks to the assistance of the locking rolls in combination with the own weight of the window.
- the studs When the sash is in its completely closed position, the studs have passed somewhat over the vertical centre lines of the locking rolls.
- a pair of pivot-hinge members each comprising an element fixed to the frame and a second element fixed to the sash, said members being vertically movable relative to each other, and means connected with the sash and frame respectively and arranged to pass over and under each other along arcuate paths during the terminal portion of closing motion of the sash, whereby the sash will initially be lifted and then again lowered as the window reaches its final closed position.
- said means comprising rolls rotatable about bearings fixed to one of the frame or sash, and studs fixed to the other of the sash or frame, said studs coming into contact with a circumferential surface of the corresponding roll when the window is to be closed, so that each stud during the terminal closing motion follows an arcuate path relative to said cooperating roll, which path is concentric with the corresponding bearing.
- a combined operating and locking mechanism comprising two parts, one part of which is mounted on the window sash and comprises a handle and an arm mounted thereon, and a second part of which is mounted on the window frame, said second part comprising a slot inclined relative to the plane of the window, said handle being rotatable to cause said arm to engage said slot and force said sash toward closed position.
