K. DUNHAM CORSET.'
I No. 334,359. .Patented Jan. 12,1386.
N. PETERS, FhoIn-Llhugn'pher. Wa'shingtan, DVC.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
KATE DUNHAM, OF HOLLOVVAY, MICHIGAN.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 334,359, dated January l2, 1886.
Application filed November 20. i884. Serial No. 148,416. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATE DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holloway, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Health Corsets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to health corsets; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure lis a view in perspective of a health corset applied in position, one of the pockets being open. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the corset, shcwing the pockets closed.
Referring by letter to the `accompanying drawings, A designates the body of the corset, which is constructed in two sections connected at the back by the usual laces, and having the corset-steels at the front, as now commonly constructed.
B B designate the shoulder straps, which are provided with eyelets C, and are connected by laces D to the aps E at the top and front ot' the sections.
Just below each top ilap E each corset section is provided with a pocket, F, the larger flap F of which is provided with a button, G, near its upper connected corner, G, which, when the pocket F is closed, is buttoned into a button-hole, H, in the upper corner of the smaller iiap I of the pocket.
Near the point J of the larger or covering ap F', I provide a second button-hole, K, which receives a button, L, near the front ot' the section, over the corset-steel.
At the swells for the hips the corset-sections are provided with extensions M, to which elastics N are stitched, and to the lower ends of said elastics N are buckled the stockingsupporters P, having metallic loops Q at their lower ends.
rIhe corset-sections are each provided in their lower ends, near their steels, with slits R, near the edges of which are provided the eyclets S, through which laces I are passed to render the parts adjustable at these points.
lhe corset-sections are also provided with short straps V, to which the skirts are to be attached.
The extensions INI are comfortable to the wearer, and are very convenient, as the elastics are stitched to them, thereby dispensing with the use of buttons, pins, or hooks at these points.
The bust arrangement is most convenient for the nurse on account of being so easily opened. Furthermore, it is particularly comfortable to the child while nursing, the construction being such as to allow the whole breast to be exposed, thereby enabling the child to nurse without interference.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A corset provided with the tcp aps, E, and an opening or space provided in the corset below the top flaps, a flap, F', located on one side ofthe space or opening from the top to the bottom thereof. a button-hole, K, pro' vided in-the ap F, a button, L, located on the opposite side of the space or opening, the said flap closing over the latter and connecting with the button and opening or being thrown back laterally in a vertical line, for the purpose sel. forth.
2. A corset provided with the nursing-pockets, comprising the flap I, having a buttonhole, H, the flap F', provided with the button G and the buttonhole K, and a brtton, L, provided on the corset beyond the ap I, for the purpose set forth.
3. A corset provided with the top flaps, E, and the pockets arranged to close a space or opening provided in the corset below the top flaps, said pockets comprising two tlaps, F I, both of which open laterally in opposite directions to expose the opening, the rlap F covering the flap I, when closed, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KATE DUNHAM.
