" ATENI BYRON BALDWIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THOMSON, LANGDON & GO.
NURSING- -CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,870, dated May 18, 1886.
Application filed December 30, 1885. Serial No. 187,097. (No model.)
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to produce a corset for nursing-women which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, and which, moreover, will always be comfortable to the wearer. Vith this end in view I have devised the improvements in the Thomson Glove Fitting Corset of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, referenceletters being used to indicate the several parts.
Figure l is a perspective of one form of my improved corset complete, the flap upon the left side being thrown open, as in nursing, and upon the right side being closed; Fig. 2, an elevation, upon an enlarged scale, of the portion of the corset-front to which one form of my invention is applied, the construction being slightly diiferent from that illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, is a similar view illustrating still another form of my invention.
A is the body-section; B, the bust-extension of the body-section; G, the upper front extension of the body-section; D, the lower front extension of the bodysection; E, the under arm-section, and F the hipsection. These parts all exist in the well-known glove-fitting corset. My improved construction, however, requires that the following changes be made in the shape ofthe parts, viz: that the bustextension B be made wider than in the ordinary corset, and that the bust-gore G be correspondingly narrowed.
H indicates the usual section-seams, K the stay-pockets, and L the clasps.
The peculiarity of my improved construction is,that I cut out the upper portion of the bust-extension B to form an opening, M. This opening is so located that when the corset is in place upon the person of the wearer the nip ple will pass through it.
P is a binding, which is preferably stitched or otherwise secured about opening M.
Q is a flap, which is stitched in at one of the regular seams, and is adapted, when in its closed position,to fully cover opening M. This flap is lined with a soft fieecy material, R, thereby wholly avoiding the harshness of ordinary corset material, and preventing the slightest irritation to the delicate parts with which it comes in contact. The flap may be held to its closed position in any suitable manner. I preferably, however, use clasps S upon the fiap, which engage their corresponding parts, S, secured to the corset proper, as is clearly shown.
In practice I contemplate making opening M in a separate piece or gore, A, and stitching the latter to the body-section A, (see Fig. 2,) instead of making said opening in an extension of the body-section, asin Fig. 1. This separate piece, in fact, takes the place of bustextension 13, no other changes in construction being required. By making opening M in a separate piece I am enabled to finish the portion of the'corset which contains my invention independently of the rest, thus avoiding handling the entire corset.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 3 I round up the upper portion of opening M, as at N N, partially closing it, and fill in the rest of the opening at the top with a piece of elastic web,O, attached at each end to parts N. Opening M in the form of my invention shown in Fig. 3 is thus made elliptical in outline, which is preferable in this form.
When the piece of elastic web is used, it insures that the bust portion of the corset fits tolerably closely to the person of the wearer, but at the same time permits the expansion of the breast as it becomes filledwith milk without the wearer experiencing the slightest pain or inconvenience.
It will of course be understood that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. A corset having its breastsection provided with a rounded-out opening, M, combined with a fleece-lined flap permanently attached at one 3. A corset having its breast-section provided with an opening, M, combined with a piece of elastic Webbing across the top of said opening, a flap hinged at one side to the corset, and fastenings for detachably securing the opposite side of said flap to the corset, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BYRON BALDWIN.
