COAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,207, dated October 13, 1885.

Application filed June 5, 1885. Serial No. 167,806. (ModeL) certain new and useful improvements in coats,

whereby the same fit well and remain in proper position and shape on the breast without requiring them to be buttoned.

The invention also consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is an inside view of part of a coat provided with my improvements, parts being broken out. the canvas and hair-cloth. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line m m, Fig. 1.

The piece of canvas A is cut in the usual manner, and provided with the lapel B, and a piece of hair-cloth, G, is out according to the shape of the breast. A smaller piece of hair-cloth, D, is interposed between the haircloth 0 and the canvas, and then the three layers are padded together either by hand or by means of a sewing-machine. I then form a stay, E, where the lapel is toturn and the lapel is folded.

A piece, F, of elastic or rubber band is secured in a pocket in the stay E, and stretched as much as is necessary and secured. By this construction the coat will remain in position and shape on the breast of the wearer without buttoning.

Fig. 2 is a detail side view of G is the lining, and H the cloth of the coat.

In case the breast is not too round I use the stay only without the rubber, but otherwise the rubber is used.

This improvement can be applied on coats of all kinds, medium, long, or short, and does L not interfere with the button-holes.

A coat provided with my improvement always fits perfectly, whether it is buttoned or not.

The stiffening material is very light and increases the weight of the coat but slightly.

At the top button,where thelapel is intended to fold, a stay starts and runs downward toward the bottom of the coat, which stay supports and holds the front edge of the haircloth and canvas to keep it in shape along the front edge of the coat.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A coat provided with a stiffening layer of canvas, a stiffening layer of hair-cloth, an additional layer of hair cloth between the first-mentioned hair-cloth and the canvas, and a stay at the lapel, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. A coat provided with the canvas stiffener A, the hair-cloth stiffener O, the stay E at the lapel, and the elastic band F in the stay, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. A coat provided with the canvas stiffener A, the hair-cloth stiffener C, the stay E at the lapel of the coat, and the elastic band F in said stay at the lapel, said elastic band extending in the direction of the inner edge of the lapel, substantially as herein shown and described.
