' MZ 7W? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON PAUL MAGLY, CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SHIRT- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,731, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed March 13,1902. Serial No. 98,010. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, MILTON PAUL ll/IAGLY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati,in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in shirts, and has for its object to provide a shirt of a simple and inexpensive nature which shall combine certain of the advantages of both neglige and dress shirts, giving the appearance of a dress shirt when worn with a high-cut vest, but having the lower portion of its bosom made soft and pliable similarly to a neglige shirt, so as to render the improved shirt more comfortable, especially in warm weather, than shirts having a stiff bosom.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the improved shirt whereby certain important advantages are attained and the shirt is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise betteradapted and more convenient for Wear, all aswill be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a view showing a shirt embodying my improvements, the lower portion thereof being broken out for lack of space. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken centrally and vertically through the outer ply or part of the shirt-bosom along one side of the front opening therein. Fig. 3 is a detached detail View showing one form of the facing-strip or reinforce for the shirtbosom at the side of the front opening, in
which said strip has its upper end enlarged to form a lining for the stiff and thicker upper part of the bosom. Fig. 4 shows a modified form of the improved shirt, in whichthe said facing-strip or reinforce is formed into a plait the upper end of which extends vertically over the stiff and thicker upper part of the shirt-bosom.
As shown in the views, 1 indicates the body portion of the improved shirt, and 2 represents the neckband thereof.
3 indicates the bosom portion of the shirt, which is made in the way common in neglige shirts from a single thickness or ply of the material of which the body portion of the shirt is formed. The improved shirt has a front slit or opening 4 extended centrally downits bosom portion from the neckband 2, and this slit or opening is adapted to be closed by buttons 6 6, which may be either sewed fast upon the shirt or may be removably held thereto in a well-known Way. The outer edge of the shirt-bosom 3 has along the edge of the front slit or opening 4 a facingstrip or reinforce 5, formed from a separate strip or piece of material stitched to the edge of the material from which the bosom portion 3 of the shirt is formed, and this facingstrip or reinforce 5 extends along the lower portion of the slit or opening 4, as shown in Figspl and 2, giving a double thickness of material, in which the buttonholes may be formed, the upper end of said strip or piece of material 5 being preferably made laterally extended or wider along one of its sides, as shown at 10 in the detail view, Fig. 3.
7 indicatesa piece or sheet of material of the kind commonly employed for the bosoms of ordinary dress-shirtsand cut to a general triangular form, with its upper edge curved and held in the seam at the neckband 2 of the shirt along one side of the front slit or opening 4 therein, its upper extremity being extended up to theshoulder portion of the shirt and being adapted to be held by ayoke or in a shoulder-seam in a well-known way. The diagonal side edge of said piece 7 is extended down diagonally from the shoulder portion of the shirt toward the edge of the reinforce or facing-strip 5, near the upper part of said strip 5, and the lower end of said piece 7 is extended, as shown at 8, across the outer face of the facing-strip 5 at the base of the enlarged upperpart 10 thereof. A similarlyshaped piece or sheet 7 is extended in a similar manner over the upper part of the shirtbosom at the opposite side of the front opening 4 therein.
The enlarged upper end 10 of the facingstrip or reinforce 5 is cut in a form similarto the piece or sheet 7, which is extended over it in such a way as to give to the upper part of the shirt-bosom below and around the neckband 2 a three-ply thickness, and,if desired, this thickened upper portion of the shirt-bosom may be made with one or more other linings,
log
as shown at 9 in Fig. 2, so as to further increase its thickness and stiffness, the corresponding part of the shirt-bosom at the opposite side of the front slit or opening 4 in the shirt-bosom being similarly stifiened and thickened. By this construction it will be seen that the upper part of the shirt-bosom immediately beneath and around the neckband 2 is made thick and stiff, after the manner of the bosoms of dress-shirts, and when the improved shirt is worn with a high-cut vest this thickened and stiff upper portion will be the only part of the shirt-bosom visible at the opening in the vest-front, so that the improved shirt will then present the appearance of an ordinary dress-shirt with stiff bosom. At the same time the lower portions of the shirt-bosom 3 being of a single thickness of material are soft and pliable and do not retain the heat of the body, so that the improved shirt may be worn with the same comfort as neglige shirts and is thus especially well adapted for use in hot weather. The lower portion of the shirt-bosom being thin and soft does not so readily show the effects of perspiration as do the stifi bosoms of ordinary dress-shirts, and said soft and thin bosom is not liable to become cracked and crumpled, so that the improved shirt is capable of being worn for a greater time without appearing untidy than are ordinary starched shirts.
In Fig. 4 I have shown an arrangement wherein the upper end 11 of the facing-strip or reinforce 5 is extended up over the outer face of the piece 7, so as to form a central plait extended up the shirt-front and giving when worn with a vest the appearance of a plaited shirt. In this form of the shirt the plait thus formed covers up the lower end of the sheet or piece 7, so as to give an improved appearance and finish.
From the above description it will be obvious that the improved shirt is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and is especiallywell adapted for use, since it combines the appearance of a dressshirt with the comfort of a neglige shirt, and it will also be obvious from the above description that the improved shirt is capable of some modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts as herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A shirt having a bosom portion formed from soft and thin material and provided with a front slit or opening extended down said bosom portion and provided with fastening devices, the upper part of said bosom portion being provided upon its outer side with stiifened or thickened parts extended around the neck of the shirt and upon the shoulder portions thereof and having their sides extended from said shoulder portions of the shirt downward to the edges of said front slit or opening with their lower ends above the fastening devices for said slit or opening, substantially as set forth.
2. A shirt having a bosom portion formed from soft and thin material and provided with a front slit or opening extended down said bosom portion and provided with fastening devices, one edge of said slit or opening being provided with a facing-strip or reinforce, and the upper part of said bosom portion being provided upon its outer side with stiffened or thickened parts extended around the neck of the shirt and upon the shoulder portions thereof and having their sides extended from said shoulder portions downward and diagonally toward each other and to the edges of said front slit or opening with their lower ends above the fastening devices for said slit or opening, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Cincinnati, Ohio, this 11th day of March, 1902.
