Description
(No Model.)
I DETAOHABLE TABLE LEG. No. 326,582. Patented Sept. 22, 1885.
Inventu-ra MyflM WW7 I Fries.
WALTER A. OSBORN AND DAVID M. ESTEY, OF OWVOSSO, MICHIGAN.
DETACHABLE TABLE-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,582, dated September 22,1885.
Application filed April 7, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER A. OSBORN and DAVID M. ESTEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Owosso, in the county of 5 bhiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Table-Legs for Knockdown Tables, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention more especially relates to to that class of table-legs which may be detached or attached easily and quickly without the use of any screw, tool, or other loose piece.
We attain the object desired by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying draw- 1 :ings, in which Figure l is a perspective view ot'aleg locked in place by our device. Fig. 2 shows the corner (underneath) of the table with that portion of the device which remains attached to the corner-brace when the leg is 20 removed. Fig. 3 shows the leg when detached,
with its permanently fixed portion of the device-the clamped hook-and the necessary mortises. Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe metal clamped hook when removed from the 25 post or leg.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the table-leg with the usual mortises, a a, as in the better class of tables,
0 where the frame is secured to the same by tenons. It has, however, additional mortises or rabbets, b 1), into which the clamp of the hook O rigidly fastens when driven into place, and which will remain rigid and secure with- 3 5 out screw or bolt,as shrinkage.the only thing that could affectitwill rather tend to tighten it than otherwise. The ends of the framepieces E E are teuoned to enter the inortises a a, and are made to fit close but not tight.
(No model.)
The framepieces are secured rigidly together 4( by the corner-brace B, which has an open slot, 6, about two inches in length, cut vertically through its center, and sufficient to coincide with the slot in the plate F, which is secured over the same on the brace by screws, 5 and through which the hook 0 passes when the leg is slipped into place. To this slotted plate F,and directly above the slot,is secured freely by bolt the curved rota-ting Wedge D, provided with a lever or handle, 0. This 5c wedge is made to lock securely and rigidly with the hook 0 when rotated downward, thus forcing the leg tightly and permanently into place against the frame until it isdesired to detach it, when in one moment, without 55 the aid of any tool or instrument, but simply by rotating the curved Wedge upward by the lever or handle 0, it is free to slip out and ready for packing.
In regard to the utility and convenience of 6c this kind of table it is needless to explain, while we deem the above sufficient to illustrate clearly our device.
\Vhatwe claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a knockdown table, the detachable leg A, provided with the hook O, in combination with the slotted corner-brace B, to which is secured the slotted plate F, provided with the rotating curved wedge D, having a lever or 7c handle, 0, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
