Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. NoLEN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Searcy, in the county of White and State of Arkansas,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the ro underside of a table constructed in accordance with my invention, two ofthe legs being removed to clearly show the recess made in the frame for their reception. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the frame of the I: table and two of the legs thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same passing through the frame and two of the legs.

My invention relates to improvements in tables provided with legs which are readily 2o removable for packing and transportation; and the objects of my invention are to produce a frame of great strength and simplicity for tables and other articles of furniture in which the use vof tenons, mortises, and dovetailed cuts from or into the tableframe is dispensed with. y

The invention will first be described in connection with thedrawi ngs, and then be pointed out in the claims.

The table-frame is composed of four boards of suitable length to form the side rails, A, and end rails, B, thereof. The ends of these boards or rails are 4sawed across,prefer ably at an angle of ninety degrees,to the edge and side thereof. They are then united by angle-plates C, of wrought orof cast metal, either plain or ornamental, placed on the outside of the table-frame, and diagonal braces D are secured to the rails on the inside of each corner. Nails, or, preferably, screws,c,are then driven th rough perforations in the angle-plates into the side and end rails and into the braces D, and the parts composing the frame are thus promptly and firmly united together. The

table-top E is then secured to the table-frame in the usual manner. A Socket or recess, F,

is thus formed at each corner for the reception of the upper end of the table-legs G. The lower end of said legs may have any suitable form, either cylindrical or polygonal. A square form is first given to the upper end of the legs, but before it can be inserted into one of the recesses F the vertical edge of one of the angles is cut off, giving thereby a pentagonal form to the upper end of each leg corresponding with the form of the recess F. After the legs are inserted into the recess F they are prevented from coming off by driving a screw through the angle-plate into the side of each leg. Vhen the table is to be shipped, the screws f are removed and the legs withdrawn from their sockets and laid or packed within the space formed between the rails A and B, and thus a comparatively small package is produced.

Having now fully described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of table-legs provided with a polygonal tenon at one end thereof, a table-frame having side and end rails with spaces between them, diagonal braces secured to said rails, and exterior angle-plates having screws passing through the frame and into the diagonal braces, whereby a mortse is formed for the tenon of each leg,and the rails, diagonal brace,and angle-plate will bear against the different sides of the tenon therein inserted, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination ofthe side and end rails, A B, exterior angle-plates, C, secured to the Sides of the frame, and diagonal braces D, arranged to form together a pentagonal socket between them, with removable legs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
