To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD R. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Devices for Drawing-Boards andqthe like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in supporting devices designed for use in connection with drawing boards and the like, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of durable and economical construction, one which may be readily and easily assembled and set up in a small space whereby the same is especially adapted for home use, and one which will be efficient in use.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combina tions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. The invention will bebest understoodby reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which, 7

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a clamp 1 having a clamping screw 2 whereby the same may be engaged with the edge of a chair seat, table top or other suitable support 3. Upon the engaging face of the stationary jaw of the clamp is provided a lining 4 of felt or other non-abrasive material to prevent marring of the surface engaged thereby.

Arising from the clamp 1 is an upright or post 5 the lower end thereof being adjustably secured to the clamp 1 by means of clamping jaws 6 formed on said clamp which are adapted to clampingly engage with said upright as shown. A thumb screw 7 cotiperates with the jaws 6 for pressing the same into operative relation with said upright. By loosening the screw 7 it will be seen that upright 5 may be adjusted vertically to any position desired.

At the upper end of upright 5 is provided a rest for the drawing board or other device' which it is desired to place thereon. Said rest comprises a transversely extending member 8 at the ends of which are provided bars 9 extending at right angles thereto and fastened to said member 8 by means of bolts 10 and coiiperating thumb nuts 11. The under sides of bars 9 are re cessed as at 12 for the reception of the upper portion of member 8 resulting in a firm and rigid construction. In order to adapt the rest for use in connection with drawing boards or otherdevices which are too narrow to be engaged with the bars 9 in the position shown, a second set of perforations 10 are. provided in the bar 8 for accommodation of 'thefbolts 10. It will be seen that when the bolts 10 are engaged with the perforations 10 the bars 9 will be positioned more closely together.

The member 8. is secured centrally at its under side to a plate 13 from which depends a slug 14. The lug 1 1 is pivotally connected by means of a bolt 15 and cooperating thumb nut 16 with the upper end 17 of the upright 5, the arrangement being such as will be 'seen that the rest may be angularly adjusted to any position desired in order to meet the desires and convenience of the user of the device. The contacting surfaces of the lug 14; and end 17 are formed with radially extending teeth 18 adapted to interlock with each other in order to se curely lock the rest in positions of adjustment upon tightening of thumb nut 16 as will be readily understood. 1

Projecting upwardly from the forward. ends of bars 9 are stops 19 against which the front or lower edge of the drawing board or other device arranged upon the rest is adapted to engage. Provided at the rearward ends of bars 9 are vertically extending auxiliary supports 20 adapted, when in operative position, to engage at their lower ends against the upper side of the support 3 in order to insure rigid supporting of the bars 9 and hence the rest of which said bars are a part. The auxiliary supporting members 20 engage in slots 21 formed in the rearward ends of bars 9, bolts 22 and cooperating nuts 23 affording means for pressing the sides of the bifurcated ends of the bars into clamping engagement with said auxiliary supports. The arrangement is such, as will be seen, that said auxiliary supports may be adjusted vertically to any position desired or said supporting members may be completely detached if desired. The lower ends of said supporting members 20 are covered with pieces of felt or other suitable non-abrasive material 29 to prevent marring of the surface engaged thereby. At

may be readily and easily set up in any place where a chair, table or the like is to be found, thus adapting the same for use where little space is available. Also the device is of a collapsible or foldable character, the parts being so connected as to permit of ready and easy disconnection of the same, which is of course of advantage in storage or shipping. Moreover the construction is extremely simple and economical rendering it possible to manufacture the same at a very low cost.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but

Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p

1. A supportingdev-ice'of the class described comprising an upright; means for fastening said upright to a support; a rest mounted on the upper end of said upright, said rest comprising a cross piece; a pair of spaced elongated members secured to said cross piece; auxiliary vertically extending supports for said restengaging in recesses provided in the rearward ends of said last mentioned members; and means for clampingly engaging said ends of said members with said auxiliary supports, substantially as described.

2. A supporting device of the class described comprising an upright; means for fastening said upright to a support; a rest mounted on the upper end of said upright, said rest comprising a cross piece; a pair of spaced elongated members secured to said cross piece; auxiliary vertically extending supports for said rest provided at the rearward ends of said last mentioned members and connected therewith to permit of vertical adjustment of said auxiliary supports; and means for clampingly securing said auxiliary supports in positions of vertical adjustment, substantially as described.
