Description

(No Model.)
HQ 0. HAASE. TABLE LEG FASTENING.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH C. HAASE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
TABLE-LEG FAST ENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,133, dated December 30, 1884.
Application filed August 25, 1883.
To aIZZ whom, it may concern Be it known that I, RUDOLPH O. HAASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Legs Temporarily to Tables and other Furniture; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figuresof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is'to provide a device by which the legs oftables and other furniture may be temporarily detached and such furniture more closely packed for shipping.
My invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a table-corner with top removed. Fig. 2 represents a section in perspective.
Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters in both views.
A is the corner post or leg, which is provided with a vertical hole, B, for the reception of the head 0 of the bolt, and a slot, D, for the reception of the body of the bolt E. The sides of the frames F F are held in their proper relative position to each other, as shown by the corner block, G, which is attached to the respective sides by dovetail tongue and groove joints H H preferably, though any other common or equivalent means of attachment may be used. Thus the frame is kept in shape for shipping solely by the block G and tabletop when the legs are removed. VVhen desirous to attach the legs, the head of the bolt is drawn down into place through the slot D and hole B. The other end of the bolt is inserted through the hole J of the corner block, G, when the leg A is drawn firmly into the corner against the end of the sides F F by turning down the hand-nut K.
It is obvious that the legs may be readily detached from the frame by simply loosening (No model.)
the nut K sufficiently towithdraw the head of the bolt from the slot and hole in the leg.
I am aware that heretofore the legs of tables have been'attached to a corner piece by an or-' dinary wood screw the worm of which is driven through said corner piece into the leg with a screw-driver in the ordinary manner, as shown in Patent No. 206,234.
I am also aware of the form of fastening shown in English Patent No; 9,283, of 1842, and to such forms of attachment I make no claim.
It is obvious that by my device the head of the retaining-bolt is centrally located in aslot within the leg, and its screw end projects outward through the corner block and is fastened therein by a hand-nut, which may, when desirous to take down the table, be readily removed without the aid of tools.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. The combination of the post or leg A, having hole or socket B for the reception of the head of the retaining-bolt, slot D for the reception of the body of the retainingbolt, retaining-bolt E, nut K, brace-block G, having dovetail tenons H H, and side and end rails,F, having dovetail grooves for the reception of said tenons, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The table-frame rails F F and the corner brace-block G, attached at each end to one of said rails, in combination with the leg A, said leg having a vertical recess, B, and a vertical interceptingslot, D, and the retaining-bolt E, said bolt being provided with a head fitted to the recess 13, a body fitted to slot D, and with nut K or equivalent means of tightening the bolt in position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I attiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUDOLPH o. HAASE.
