T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DoMINrcx FLATLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scaffolds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a scaHold which can be readily put together and taken apart, which is strong and simple in its construction, and which can be readily applied to uprights at any desired height thereon without screws, nails or bolts being driven into the woodwork.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved scaffold, the uprights being broken away to-save space. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing a portion of a wall in connection therewith. Fig. 3- is a sectional elevation taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking toward the left in said figure. Fig. 4 is a detail plan of the ledger-board clamp. Fig. 5 is a section, partly in elevation, taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3 looking downwardly.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 8 and 9 are uprights.
10 is a ledger-board extending transversely of said uprights and 11 and 12 are braces. The ledger-board 10 is clamped to the uprights 8 and 9 by clamps 13, 13. The clamp 13 consists, preferably, of a U-shapedbolt 14 having a cross-piece 15 and two legs 16, 16 screw-threadcd to engage nuts 17, 17, said nuts preferably being provided with handles 18 for convenience in clamping the bolt to the upright. The cross-piece 15 extends diagonally across the back of the upright 8 and the legs 1G extend across the opposite sides of said upright, above and below, respectively, the ledger-board 10. The front ends of the legs 16 project through holes provided therefor in a clamp-plate 19, and said clamp-plate and U-bolt are clamped against the front of the ledger-board and the back of said upright, respectively, by means of the nuts 17, 17.
The diagonal braces 11 and 12 bear against the under side of the ledger-board 10 at their upper ends and at their lower ends extend across the front faces of the uprights 8 and 9, respectively, being clamped to said uprights and supported thereon by clamps 20 and 21, respectively. Midway between the uprights 8 and 9 is a clamp 22. Said clamp 22 consists of a piece of fiat metal 23, bent in the form of a loop, which surrounds the ledger-board 10 and has the lower ends thereof separated and projecting beneath the bottom of the ledgerboard 10. The loop 23 is clamped to the ledger-board by bolts 24, '25, said bolts being provided with handnuts 2G, 27, respectively, whereby the metal loop 23 is firmly clamped against the ledger-board.
As hereinbefore set forth, the lower ends of the loop 23 project downwardly and inwardly beneath the ledger-board 10, leaving a space between said inwardly projecting ends and the bottom of said ledgerboard into which the adjacent cornersof the two braces 11 and 12 project. The lower edges of the braces 11 and 12 also rest upon said inwardly turned ends 28, 28. The lower ends of said braces 1l and 12 lie across the front faces of the uprights 8 and 9, respectively, and are clamped to said uprights, as hereinbefore set forth, by the clamps 2O and 2l, respectively. The clamps 2O and 2l are alike in construction except that one is a right and the other a left. Therefore, the following description of the clamp 21 will equally well describe the clamp 20. The upper portion of said clamp consists of a U-shaped bolt having a cross-piece 29 which extends across the under side of the brace 12 and two legs 30 and 31 which extend across the rear and frontfaces, respectively, of the upright 9 and of the lower portion of the brace 12. Said legs are screwthreaded and project through a clamp-plate 32 which extends across the right hand side (Fig. 1) of the upright 9. Hand-nuts 33 having screw-threaded engagement with the legs 30 and 31 serve to clamp the plate 32 against the right hand side of the upright 9 and also to clamp the cross-piece 29 against the under side of the brace 12. An arm 34 extends downwardly at an angle from the under side of the leg 30 and terminates in an eye 35 at its'lower end.
The shank 36 of a right angle bolt 37 projects through the eye 35 and has screw-threaded engagement with a hand-nut 38. Said right angle bolt shank 36 extends across the left side of the upright 9, adjacent to the lower edge of the brace 12, while the arm or head 39 thereon extends partly across the rear face of said upright 9. The eye 35 at the lower end of the arm 34 is of sufficient diameter to project over the front face of the brace 12, so that when the nut 38 is screwed up, said eye will be clamped against said front face and the bolt 37 will be drawn up by said nut 38 until the head or arm 39 is brought to bear against the rear face of the upright 9. The ordinary cross-pieces or putlogs are provided, the outer ends of said putlogs resting upon the ledger-board 10 and the inner ends upon the wall 41. Upon these cross-pieces 40 is placed the ordinary planking 42 for the flooring of the scaffold.
To assemble the scaffold, the ledger-board 10 is placed at the desired height in front of the uprights 8 and 9 and the clamps 13, 13 are then attached by slipping the U-bolts 14 into the proper position, i. e., with one leg above the ledger-board and extending across one side of the upright and the other leg below the ledger-board and extending across the opposite side of said upright. The plate 19 is then slipped over the ends of the U-bolt and said plate and U-bolt clamped to the ledger-board and upright, respectively, by means of the hand- nuts 17, 17, thus clamping the parts rmly together. The clamp 22 is then placed upon the ledger-board 10 and clamped to said ledgerboard by means of the bolts 24, 25 and nuts 26 and 27. The braces ll and l2 are then inserted at their upper ends in the space between the lower edge oi the ledger-board and the inwardly turned ends 28 of the clamp 22, the lower ends of said braces ll and l2 being clamped to the uprights 8 and 9 by the clamps 20 and 2l, respectively, which are placed in position by slipping the legs 30 and 3l through the clamp-plate 32 and binding said clamp-plate and the cross-piece 29 to the upright and brace by tightening the handnuts 33. Finally, the hand-nuts 38 are tightened, thus clamping the braces to the iront faces of the uprights.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
l. In a scaffold, two uprights, a 1edger-board extending thereacross and fast thereto, a clamp fast to said ledgerboard between said uprights, two braces extending downwardly at oppositely inclined angles from said ledger board to said uprights, the upper ends of said braces bearing against said clamp, and means to clamp the lower ends of said braces to said uprights.
2. In a scaffoldy two uprights, a ledger-board extending thereacross and fast thereto, a clamp fast to said ledger'- board between said uprights, said clamp consisting of a loop extending around said ledger-board and projecting therebelow, and two braces extending ,downwardly at oppositely inclined angles from said ledger-b0ard to said uprghts, the upper ends of said braces projecting into said loop beneath said ledger-board, and means to clamp the lower ends of said braces to said uprights.
3. In a scaffold, an upright, a brace extending upwardly at an angle thereto, and a clamp consisting of a U-shaped bolt, the legs of which extend across the front and rear faces of said brace and upright, respectively, a clampplate through which said legs project extending across one side oi' said upright, nuts having screw-threaded engagement with said legs, the cross-piece of said U-bolt extend ing across the under side of said brace, an arm integral with said U-bolt, extending downwardly therefrom and terminating at its lower end in an eye, an angle bolt extending through said eye transversely of said upright, the head of said angle bolt projecting across the rear face of said upright, and a nut having screw-threaded engagement with said bolt, whereby said brace is clamped to said upright.
