SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,699, dated October 26, 1897. Application filed December 8, 1896. Serial No. 614,949. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. FEssEN- DEN, of Oandor, in the county 'of Tioga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to bedstead-fasteners; and the object thereof is to provide a simple, strong, and inexpensive device for securing the side rails of bedsteads to the head and foot sections.

The invention resides in the novel features of construction described fully hereinafter and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of portions of a bedstead-post and side rail secured together by my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 isaplan view partly in section. Fig. 4is adetail perspective view of the lock.

A designates the post, and B the side rail, of a bedstead. Secured by staples O to the inner side of the rail is the fastener or look D, wit-h its extremities adjacent the rail end and turned or bent down to form hooks E. These hook ends are bent outward slightly or away from the rail, so as to enter freely and move downward in staple-eyes F, projected from post A. The hooks are disposed at a slight outward angle to the vertical surfaces of the post and the rail end, so that when the rail is brought to position, with the fastener or lock engaging the staple-eyes, the slightly-slanting hooks will have a wedging action within the staple-eyes, thus drawing the rail end squarely against the post and there hold it in a most secure manner, the greater the weight upon the rail the more secure and firm being the fastening. The loop ends of staple-eyes F are preferably rounded slightly, as shown, so that in applying the fastener the staple-eyes will be in proper position and adjustment when driven inward with their rounded portions engaging the post-surface.

The lock or fastener is preferably formed of heavy wire or light bar-iron, and its body portion and depending hooks being formed of a single piece or section it may be easily bent to proper form, while the expense thereof, as well as the time and labor required in applying it, is very small.

The fastener is here shown and described as a bedstead-fastenerybut I do not desire to confine myself to its use as such, for manifestly it may be used to great advantage for securing together the sections of many different knockdown and other structures.

Devices now in general use for accomplishing the purpose for which my improvement is designed are formed of cast metal and are objectionable owing to the expense attending their manufacture, and are also much more liable to become broken through wear and rough handling than the device herein proposed, for being formed of bar metal it is ex tremely strong and capable of resisting strain however exerted, while its cost is nominal and its securing means of the simplest character.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. The combination of two members adapted to be detachably locked together, the inner face of the first member having the alined rigid eyes projecting therefrom, the end of the second member abutting against the inner face of the first member beside said eyes, and the fastening bent from a single metal rod and rigidly secured against the inner side of the second member with its two free ends bent down and forming hooks not projecting beyond the end of said member, and deflected away from the inner side thereof to enter a said two projecting eyes, so that cutting and recessing of the members is avoided, substantially as described.
