Be it known that I, NEWTON W. MoOoURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedstead Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bedstead attachments; and it pertains to means for uniting the ends of the slats to the bed-rails, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim. I

The object of my invention is to provide means for preventing the falling out of the slats in beds either on account of the springing of the slats from the weight thereon or on account of the spreading of the rails of the bed, which is a common occurrence.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of one end of a bed-slat and the adjoining portion of the bed-rail, showing my invention in position therein. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the bed-rail member of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the slat member of the attachment.

Referring now to the drawings, a indicates the ordinary bed-rail, and b the ordinary slat.

A is the bed-rail member, which is composed, preferably, of a strip ofmetal (though it may be cast) and is provided intermediate its ends with screw or bolt holes 0 for the purpose of attaching it to the bed-rail. The ends of this strip'or cast member A are turned inward to form hooks d, with which the slat member B of the attachment is to engage. The bed-rail memberA of the attachment may be secured to the inner vertical wall of the bed-rail at any desired point. Preferably, however, this member of the attachment is secured ,to the vertical side wall of the usual slat-slot of the bed-rail, whereby the attachment is adapted to be applied to beds now in use or to beds with rails of the ordinary construction. The slat member B of the attachment before mentioned consists of an essentially U-shaped member, as shown, and the slat b has its end inserted between the parallel wingsf and f of this attachment B and is secured thereto by means of screws or bolts g. The lower wing f is shorter in a direction longitudinal the bed-rail and in a direction transverse the slat than the upper wing f, whereby the vertical wall hot this U shaped member is longer than the lower wingf, and thus provides the relatively laterally projecting portions 'i as compared with the lower wingf. Preferably the lower edges of these projecting portions 2' are cut away or inclined at the points m for the purpose of facilitating the attachment of this member B to the rail member A. As here shown, the slat-attaching member B has its upper wingf longer than the lower wing f, as just stated, though this is not absolutely necessary, the essential feature of the invention being that the vertical wall h of this member shall have portions 1' or their equivalent projecting for the engagement with the inturned ends or hooks (Z of the rail member A.

In the use of the invention the U -shaped slat member B being united to the ends of the slat and the member A being attached to the bed-rail the slats can be readily dropped vertically into their position, when the projecting members 2- will interlock with the hook portion (Z of the member A and serve to prevent absolutely the slats from becoming swung out of their place by bending under the weight thereon or on account of the spreading of the rails a, of the bed, as will be readily understood, while at the same time the slats are readily removable and attachable, as may be desired.

An attachment of this character is capable of being applied, as before stated, to any bed now in use or to beds of the ordinary construction by manufacturers and is simple in construction and effective in its result.
