Description

J. KN APE.
ADJUSTABLE kSHELF SUPPORT.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913;
PATENT OFFIGE;N
'JOHN xNArE, or GRAND marins,- MrcHIGAN. r
ADJUSTABLE SHELF-SUPPORT;
Application led January 26, 1912. Serial No. 673,621.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN "KNAPE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shelf-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.l
My invention relates'to improvements in adjustable shelf supports andl its objectis to provide a cheap and strong device adjustable vertically at intervals and so constructed that it is readily applied to any flat surface as occasion may require, and also occupies but little space wherever used, and to pro,4 vide. the same. with various new and useful features ashereinafter more fully described andk particularly pointed out in the claim reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a 'device'einbodying my invention;l Fig. 2 avcrtical Section of the same with additional support shown therein to illustrate the method of attachment of the same to the fixed member; Fig. 3 isa plan view of my device; Fig. Ll a perspective of the adjustable member modied for additional strength. Fig. 5 a vertical section of the same; and Fig. 6A the sheet metal blank forl forming the part as shown in Fig. 4.
Like numbers refer to like part-s in all .of the figures.
1 represents the wall of a bookcase or other support for the device showing a fiat surface to which the same may be attached. The vfixed part of th'e device consists vof a strip`of sheet metal thefmargins 2 of whichy are adapted to be secured in contact with any flat surface.l The middle portion of'.
this strip is formed outward to an extent of about double the thickness of the sheet metal of which the adjustable members aremade and provided with transverse slotsft at regu# lar intervals This middle portion has a flat outersurface in a plane parallel withthe sideportions 2 and spaced apart from the support 1 at the rear. This raised portion forms a longitudinal channel at the rear of the device adapted to receive the upturned supporting hook 8 on the adjustable member. This member consists preferably of a fiatplate of sheet metal normally adjusted horizontally and having two downwardly turned projections, 7, 7 spaced apart suficient to embrace the raised portion 3 of the bar and preferably turned downward at right' angles to engage theputer surface of the side portions 2 of the fixed member. The hook 8 is adapted to pass through 'any one of the horizontalslots 4 in the raised portion 3 of the bar and is turned upward at right angles in substantially the same plane as the projections 7 and engages the inner or rear side of the raised portion 3 of the bar in opposing relation to the projections 7 whereby the plate 5 is securely held in horizontal position, the downwardly projecting portions 7 forming a fulcrum considerably speciacatin of Letters retenu Patented Mar. 4,1913. i
below the plane of the plate 5 and .engaging plate 5 are also' preferably provided with upwardly projecting spurs 6 which enter the under side ofthe shelf and prevent rthe same from slipping on the support.
For.extra heavy loads, I prefer to reinforce the"projections 7 by bracket-shaped` braces 9 shown in Figs. 4, 5-and 6. These in the blank constitute lateral extensions of the plate -5 ,and are formed downward at i right angles thereto with the rear end abutting against the downwardly turned projections 7 and securely support the same against a very considerable downward pressure on the plate `5.
Obviously if the braces 9 are usedv the projections 7 may beI omitted and the ends of Athe braces directly engage the side portions 2 of the fixed member.
A11 adjustable shelf support, comprising a fixed member having side portions in the i saine plane adapted to be secured to a flat also having side extensions turned downsurface and a raised middle portion proward and engaging the end extensions. 10 vided with transverse slots and a plate hav- In testimony whereof I aix my signa ing at one end an upturned hook to enter ture in presence of two Witnesses. y
