BOOK-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,866, dated December 30, 1890.
Serial No. 367,331. (No model.)
To all whom it may conccrn Be it known that I, AU GUSTUS PAULI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York,
provements in Book-Hacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvenents in book-racks; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple, strong, cheap, and durable book-rack, whereby the distance between the shelves maybe readily changed and wherein the parts shall be simple, few in number, and those easily manipulated to accomplish the desired end.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which--- Figurel is a side elevation of one of the posts or standards, showing two of the brackets thereon and a portion of the top braces. Fig. 2 is a similar View of another form of post or standard. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a porthrough the post of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar section through the post of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a plan of one of the brackets shown in' Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a plan ot' one of the posts or standards, showing the manne' of connect-ing the top braces thereto. Fig. 8 is a front View of a portion or section of the rack complete ready for use.
Like letters of reference indcate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the draw ings by letter, A designates a post or standard provided with a suitable base a, as seen in Figs. 1 and 8, or it may be without a base and Secured in position by any suitable means. The form of this post in cross-section may be varie/(l. I have shown two forms; but these are lut few of the many which I have devised. These standards or posts are to be set in rows of two or more the length of the shelf apart and braced at the top and bottom of the same or at the top only by brace rods or ties.
In the form of post shown in Fig. l it has a cross-section somewhat like a cross, and when this form is empioyedlbrace the posts by means of the braces B, arranged as shown in Fig. 7-that is, at right angles to each other-when the posts are arranged so that the shelves shall extend in directions at right angles to each other. This forms a strong` brace and one easily Secured in position;
The post shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 7 is provided with pins or projections b, which are designed to be engaged by the lugs on the brackets hereinafter described.
In the form shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4: the pins are arranged between the separated parallel portions of the post, as seen best at Fig. 4:. Two or more of these posts or standards may be arranged in tiers, one overthe other, and they maybe polished, galvanized, painted, stained, or otherwise ornamented, as preferred.
C is the bracket, which may be ot wrought or cast metal, with one or more hooks or lugs c to fit over or between the sections of the posts or to fit between the separated parallel portions, as seen in Fig. 3, when that form of post is employed. WVhen the form shown in Figs. 1 and 5 is used, the hooks engage the pins, as seen in Fig. 1. The brackets may be forned so as to rest level or inclined, so that the shelves will be either level or inclined, as desired. They may be forned so that the shelves will rest on the top thereof or to rest on projections along the bottom of the brackets. The brackets are, like the posts, to be painted, stained, galvanized, or otherwise ornamented, as preferred.
In Fig. 1, at the left, thebracket is shown as formed with a hook d simply to engage over a pin on the post, while at the right-hand side the bracket is shown as having the shelf af fixed' in position, the latter having an upturned lip at the rear side to engage a rib or portion of the post. In this figure the shelf is supported on lugs at the bottom of the bracket. In Fig. 2, at the left-hand side, it is shown as supported upon the top of the TOO hraeket. Both of these forms nay be enpioyed in the one set of racks, if desired.
In the forn shown in Figs. 3 and (i the bracket is fo'ned with a central hook or lug 7 which engages a pin between the separated paraiiei portions of the post and has a shoulder j, which bears against the rbs or sepa- -ated portions of the post to steady thehraeket.
The sheif D is forned, preferabiy, of sheet metal, provided at the rear and front edge with a portion 71:, turned at substantiaiiy a right angie to the body of the sheif, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The sheives may be painted, stained, gaivanized, or otherwise ornamented as desi'ed. The inner upturned lip of the shelf bears against the rib of the post and keeps the sheif steady, as will be readiiy understood from Figs. 1 and 2.
If desired, the standards maybe used to Carry the fioors as weil as the hrackets and sheives, and the sections can he redueed in size fron the bottom tier to the top one, thus insuring eeonomy with proportionai strength.
\Vhat I claim as new is The eonbination, with the posts formed With vertical ribs and provided With lateraily-projeeting pins, of the detaehabie metal braekets having hooks to det-achably engage the pins and iugs to support the sheives, and the shelves having right-angied portions at opposite edges extending in opposite directions and supported on the braekets, with the inner rightangied portions en gaging the rih of the post, substantiaiiy as specified.
In testiinony that I claim the above I have hereunto snbseribed my name in the presenee of two witnesses.
AUGUS' ?UC PAULT.
