J. M. WETHERELL. COMBINED SAFETY PIN AND BUCKLE.
No. 323,759. Patented Aug. 4, 1885.
-ZiWW 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. WETHERELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TQDR. ALICE B. STOOKHAM, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED SAFETY PIN AND BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,759, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed September 20, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, J AMES M. WETHERELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Safety Pin and Buckle, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to combined safety pins and buckles; and it consists in .certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantiallyas will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the article is formed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my device ready for use.
a represents the wire blank from which my invention is formed. One end of this wire is either secured to or formed with a suitable keeper, a, and the opposite end forms a point, I), of my pin, which is detachably engaged with the keeper in the usual manner, as shown. At or near the center of the pin the wire is but into two spiral coils, b, of the desired Iorm, as clearly seen in Fig. 2. My device is made entirely of a single piece of wire bent into the spiral loops and single bars, as shown.
The loops being upon the lower side or back of the pin, and the loops lying close together enables the band or tape to which it is secured to be connected thus: One end of the band is passed over one of the coils, around the second, and back again over the first coil, beneath the main portion of the tape or band, the strain upon which holds it tightly in place. Theband may also, if desired, be secured by passing through the loops and securing to the The device is found of utility in many Ways, but particularly in connection with ladies garments, and is very cheaply madeof a single piece of wire.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined safety pin and buckle formed of a single piece of wire, one end of which is provided with a keeper and the other pointed and detachably engaged therewith, one portion of the pin being bent to form two spiral coils at or near the center of the main body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AMES M. \VETHERELL.
