WILBER B. \VOODMAN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY. I
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 296,662, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed November 24, 1883. (No model.)
= following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in buckles; and it consists, essentially, in a buckle made from a single piece of wire in the manner hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing several embodiments of the invention.
In the formation of a buckle made from a single piece of wire the central parts of the piece will be bent to form the frame of the buckle, while the two extremities thereof will constitute the tongue and the cross-bar, or bar from which the tongue projects. In Figures 1, i
said end being wrapped upon or terminating in close relation to the side of the frame, as indicated. The other end of the piece of Wire starting from one side of the frame is twisted with or wound upon a portion of the cross-bar a, its extremity projecting from about the center thereof to one end of the buckle-frame, and forming a tongue, d.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the end of the wire forming the tongue is illustrated as being wound upon the cross-bar a, and in Fig. 2 the construction presents the tongue end of the wire and the end constituting the cross-bar as being twistedtogether.
difference in the adaptability to practical use of the methods of securing the tongue and There is probably but slight cross-bar illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, since in all of the constructions the tongue is immovably secured upon the cross-bar and has a spring action. In Figs. 1 and 2, however, the natural spring of the metal is not alone made use of, but its force is augmented by the winding of the wire upon the cross-bar.
In the construction of the buckle I am enabled to rigidly secure the tongue at its base without preventing its utilization for holding the strap, the tongue having a spring action, and its outer end being free to engage the strap.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A buckle consisting of the frame divided into two loops by a cross-bar which carries a tongue, the frame being formed from a single piece of wire, the ends of which are manipulated to close the frame and form the crossbar, substantially as set forth.
2. A buckle consisting of the frame, a crossbar dividing the frame into two loops, and a tongue, the whole being formed from a single piece of wire by bending the central parts of same to form the frame, the extremities of the piece of wire being manipulated toclose the frame, and one extremity constituting the cross-bar, the other the tongue, substantially as set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 1st day of 70 November, A D. 1883.
