AUGUSTUS M. FREEMAN, OF OCEAN GROVE, NEW JEnsEY, assrenon TO HIMSELF AND JOHN I. HOLLY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BLIND SLAT FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,087, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed March 21, 1885. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS M. MAN, of Ocean Grove, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blind- Slat Fastenings; and the following is declared to be a description of the same.
Blind-slat fastenings adapted to lock the slats when closed and to hold the slats en- 10 tirely or partially open have been made heretofore; and the obj ectof my present invention is to accomplish the same end but by anew and useful device. I employ a flat metal plate of a peculiar shape, and there are slots ber 5 tween projections upon one edge thereof, and said plate is pivotally connected to the inner surface of the blind-frame by a screw and cup or socket. There are lugs upon the upper end of the plate, and between them a swing- 2o ing tumblerlock is pivoted. This tumblerlock is adapted to being turned or swung down when the slats are closed, its edge bearing against one of the slats to lock the same and the series to which it is connected, and said lock is to be turned back, and the plate moved when it is desired to wholly or partially open the slats, in which case one slat of the series is made to enter one of the notches formed upon the edge of the plate to hold the slats in the 0 desired position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of part of ablind, with the fastening in the position it occupies when the slats are closed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the fastening and section of 5 the blind; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.
2, with the slats held open.
A represents the frame of the blind, and B the slats. a is a metal plate, preferably of malleable cast-iron. b and c are the slots formed 40 between projections 1 2 3,1nade upon one edge of said plate c. There is a cup or socket, d,
covering the lower end of the plate a, and a screw, 4, passing through said cup and plate into the blind'framaand forming a pivot for the plate c. There are lugs, e, upon the upper end of the plate a, and to them the swinging tumbler-lock f is pivoted by pin 5.
The parts when not in use occupy the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1; but when it is desired to lock the slats closed the plate a is moved into the position shown by full lines, Fig. 1, and the tumbler-lock f is turned into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, its Outer edge coming in contact with the surface ot the closed slat, thereby locking the same, and the end of said tumbler-lock being heavy retains it in place against the slat.
\Vhen it is desired to wholly or partially open the slats B, the lock f is turned up, and the plate (0 moved back, and the edge of one slat of the series is inserted in either slot 1; or c,according to the desired position of the slats, and when so placed the slats are held rigidly in place, and cannot be opened or closed by the action of the wind or by gravity.
This device is inexpensive and efficient, and can be readily applied to the blind by any one.
I claim as my invention 1. In a blind-slat fastening, the combinanation, with the plate (I, having slots 1' and c, of the cup or socket (Z, to which the plate a is pivotally connected at its lower end, and the swinging tumbler-lock f upon its upper end, substantially as specified.
2. In a blindslat fastening, the combina tion, with the plate a, having the slots 1) and c, of a screw for connecting said plate to thc blind, and a swinging tumbler-lock pivotally connected to the upper part of plate an, ant adapted to being turned down to lock the slats substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 13th day of March ,A. D 1885.
AUGUSTUS M. FREEMAN.
W'itnesses:
GEO. T. PINOKNEY, WILLIAM G. Mora.
