Description

(Model.)
7 P. E. SMITH."
. ADJUSTABLE CHECK GUTTBR.
No. 313,544. Patented Mar. 10, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK'E.'SMITH, OF TOLEDO, IOWA.
ADJUSTABLE CHECK-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,544, dated March 10, 1885.
Application filed February 1, 1884. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
of the strips a, and after passing in opposite Be it known that I, FRANK E. SMITH,'of directions through the said slots are slightly Toledo, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented an Adjustable Check- Outter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in check-cutters or devices whereby checks and the like may be separated or detached from the stubs of a book; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying'drawings, to which similar letters of reference are made indicating corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a check-book, showing my device applied with a check partly separated from its stub; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed from the book.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates a book, which may be of any approved form, such as the ordinary check or receipt book.
B indicates the cutting or severing device, which consists, essentially, of the strips a a. These strips are preferably formed of metal and respectively provided with a central longitudinal slot, 1), forming guideways for the transverse connecting-studs O 0. These studs are secured to the adjacent overlapping ends beaten over or headed to partly overlap the opposite'flat sides of the respective strips, so as to allow-a longitudinal sliding movement. The strips a are also provided at their outer ends with downward vertical flanges D,to engage the edge of the cover and leaves of the book, and guide-loops E, for the passage of an elastic strap or band, F, for holding the device in proper position upon a book.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that my device may be adjusted for books of various widths by drawing the strips a apart until the vertical end flanges are brought to engage the longitudinal edges of the leaves or cover of a book, the elastic band or strap passing beneath the leaves and lower cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the check-cutter consisting of the strips (1 a, connected together by studs 0 and having the central longitudinal slots, b, the vertical end flanges having the guide-loops,and the elastic band or strap, all adapted to operate substantially as specified.
