J. B-. AUSTIN.
GHBGK BOOK.
No. 549,890. Patented Nov. 19, 1895.
"NITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
JAMES B. AUSTIN, OF CORDELE, GEORGIA.
CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,890, dated November 19, 1895. Application filed March 28, 1895. Serial No. 543,526. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES B. AUSTIN, of Oordele, county of Dooly, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Books, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce a book having improved check-retaining devices in its front and back sides and having intermediate account-pages for keeping account of the loose checks.
A- further object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for facilitating the ruling of lines upon the checks and intermediate pages or for tearing the same when desired.-
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is perspective View of my device. Fig. 2 is a view of a modification thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates the cover of abook of suitable size, shape, and material.
2 indicates ruled pages designed for keeping account of the checks drawn from the book, and 3 indicates the checks which are retained by means of retaining-loops 4, secured at their opposite ends to the cover and located diagonally across the corners thereof, as illustrated. The loops 4 are preferably made of elastic material permanently secured at one end and having their opposite ends adjustable along the edge of the cover by means of a slot and button arrangement 5, as illustrated.
It is evident by reason of the angle of the strain exerted by the loop with respect to the sides of the slot that the button upon the end of the slot will remain in its adj usted position, by this means accommodatingalarger or smaller number of checks, as the case maybe. It may be preferable in some cases, however, to cut the loop from the cover instead of employing a separate loop secured thereto.
6 6 indicates clip-retaining pieces or layers of material, preferably fabric or stout paper, which are secured along their opposite edges to the cover in such a manner as to permit the pivot ends 7 of the ruler-clip 8 to pass between their ends and the cover and to be retained pivotally and laterally movable therebetween. These clips are preferably rectangularly formed, as illustrated, the ends being of suflicientlength to reach nearly to the center of the pages when the clip is moved to the center of the cover and turned down, as illustrated in Fig. 1. It will be observed that by this construction the clips may be moved across or may be turned upon their pivots and used as straight edges upon the intermediate pages,
I do not limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but desire to reserve to myself the right to modify and vary them at will within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is-= 1. In a checkbook, the combination with a cover and intermediate account pages, of a.
check retaining device, and a clip laterally movable upon the face of the checks and intermediate pages, substantially as specified.
2. In a check book, the combination with a cover and intermediate account pages, of a check retaining device and a pivoted clip laterally movable upon the face of the checks and intermediate pages, substantially as specified.
3. In a check book, the combination with a cover and check retaining device, of a clip retaining piecesecured to the cover, and clips retained between the cover and the clip retaining piece and laterally movable upon the face of the checks, substantially as specified.
i. In a check retaining device for check books, the combination with the cover, of flexible check retaining loops secured across the corners thereof, and mechanism for adjusting one end of the loops along the edge of the cover, substantially as specified.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JAMES B. AUSTIN. Witnesses:
L. L. CAWLEY, S. W. TAYLOR.
