- My invention consists in, first, so shaping the clamping-pieces of the tile at their lower ends as to form a short recess, as shown in the drawings, and designated bythe letter A, and whereby the lower edge of the paper is saved from actual contact with the substance of' the clampingpieces when turning over the leaves or rolling them around the tile in the operation of reading the paper, the recess being formed by cutting away a portion of each edge of the clamping-pieces at the bottom of the namely, so as to admit of using either edge of either piece in clamping the paper, thereby also obviating any difficulty arising from warp or springin either piece, since to reverse them upon the paper it is only necessary to change the connecting-pin and the free shank of the hinge from the one edge to the other 5 second, in substituting for the stationary or fixed nut operating a shank of the hinge, as seen in a patent granted me on the 5th day of September,

- the eect of the recess is to lessen, in a large degree, the tendency to rupture or tear the paper at that point, consequent upon having its lower edge constantly stretched across the hard substance of the clamping-pieces, as in ordinary files.

Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
NEWSPAPER-FILE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,320, dated May 1, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. W. FOARD, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Paper-Files; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2, an edge view; Figs. 3, 4, and 5, detached portions of my i11- vention.
My invention consists in, first, so shaping the clamping-pieces of the tile at their lower ends as to form a short recess, as shown in the drawings, and designated bythe letter A, and whereby the lower edge of the paper is saved from actual contact with the substance of' the clampingpieces when turning over the leaves or rolling them around the tile in the operation of reading the paper, the recess being formed by cutting away a portion of each edge of the clamping-pieces at the bottom of the iile, so as to admit of using either edge of either piece in clamping the paper, thereby also obviating any difficulty arising from warp or springin either piece, since to reverse them upon the paper it is only necessary to change the connecting-pin and the free shank of the hinge from the one edge to the other 5 second, in substituting for the stationary or fixed nut operating a shank of the hinge, as seen in a patent granted me on the 5th day of September,
1865, No. 49,744, the movable nut, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and designated by the letter J, and its appropriate slot in one of the clamping-pieces, the nut being in the form of a disk, and to be operated by ones` finger and thumb, thereby enabling one to close or separate the clamping-pieces at that end at pleasure.
The eect of the recess is to lessen, in a large degree, the tendency to rupture or tear the paper at that point, consequent upon having its lower edge constantly stretched across the hard substance of the clamping-pieces, as in ordinary files.
I have made no reference to other points in the drawings, for the reason that they consttute no part of my claim in these presents.
What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The short recess at the bottom of the le, in
combination with the movable nut whereby the hinge is operated, the latter enabling one to adjust the file at that end to any desired thickness of paper.
San Francisco, California, March 13, 1866. J. W. FOARD. Witnesses:
